Wars don't end when the shooting stops. Heavy metal contamination from explosions, fuel burning, and disturbed subsoil layers can stay in the ground for decades - affecting soil chemistry, plant recovery, and water quality long after the front lines have moved.
Scientists at the Askania-Nova Biosphere Reserve, together with the M.M. Hryshko National Botanical Garden and the M.H. Kholodny Institute of Botany (both of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine), are now documenting that chemistry at scale.
Their field tool is a portable X-ray fluorescence analyzer — purchased with the support of UNESCO Ukraine and Elvatech. The instrument allows in-field screening of toxic elements directly at bomb craters and damaged terrain, with confirmed samples then sent to laboratory analysis.
Early findings: elevated copper, lead, and cadmium in several craters and adjacent soil. To distinguish natural geochemical variation from war-related contamination, the team analyzes ratios between metals and against iron content as a reference baseline.
A few things make this work matter beyond the immediate science:
→ It builds the first systematic dataset on heavy-metal contamination from modern combat in steppe ecosystems — terrain that's otherwise difficult to characterize at this resolution.
→ It creates the chemical baseline that will be needed for any future ecological restoration of these territories.
→ It demonstrates what portable XRF actually enables in field research that doesn't have weeks to wait for lab queues.
War damages people, infrastructure, and economies. It also damages ecosystems in ways that need careful documentation before recovery can happen. We're proud to support this work.

Temperature changes. Transportation. Mechanical shocks. Electronics aging.
Four things that can shift the energy calibration on a portable XRF over time. None of them happen all at once. All of them happen eventually.
The right answer isn't recalibrating constantly, "just in case." It's periodic checks — after transportation, roughly every six months, or when results look off against a known reference.
New Elvatech Academy video walks through the practical workflow on ProSpector 3:
→ What energy calibration actually does inside the analyzer

→ Why the energy scale drifts over time

→ How to check using the certified 316 stainless steel reference sample

→ When to use the 2024 aluminum alloy reference (for light-element configurations)

→ How to compare measurements against the certificate ranges

→ When recalibration is actually required — and when you can skip it
The full procedure runs through the ProSpector 3 menu. No computer connection needed.

Day one of E-Waste World Expo and Metal Recycling Expo in Frankfurt — and our managers haven't had time to sit down.
The queue at booth D135 started before we finished setting up the demo unit. Recyclers walking in with PCB fragments from their lines. Asset recovery teams asking about ROHS screening on plastics. Scrap yards bringing alloy samples they wanted answered in seconds, not days.
Three seconds on the ProSpector 3 and the conversation moves from "what is this?" to "how do we integrate this into our workflow?" — which is exactly the conversation we came to Frankfurt to have.
If you're at the show and haven't found us yet, we're on the floor through tomorrow. Booth D135. Bring something to test — and bring patience for the queue.
Huge thanks to Vlad and Natasha for keeping the booth running through every minute of it.

Day one of EXRS 2026 in Catania.
We just walked past the sponsor wall — there we are, every edition since 2002. Bronze tier, alongside the detector, source, and optics companies whose components go into the analyzers we build.
A lot has changed in 24 years. The instruments we ship today share more concepts with synchrotron beamlines than with the first portable XRF prototypes we sent out of Kyiv in the early 2000s. The European X-ray community has grown, splintered, refocused, reconvened — and somehow still finds a way to be in one room every two years.
What hasn't changed: this is where the people who build, study, and apply X-ray spectrometry meet face to face. We're glad to keep our name on the wall.
A week of papers, posters, and conversations ahead at Le Ciminiere.

Nine days until E-Waste World Expo & Metal Recycling Expo 2026 open together in Frankfurt — two industries in one venue, both built on the same question: what's actually in the material you just received?
For e-waste recyclers: precious metal content on PCBs, ROHS-restricted substances in plastics, chemistry confirmation across mixed WEEE streams. A ton of recycled smartphones contains more gold per ton than typical gold ore — but only if you can identify and sort it fast enough.
For metal recyclers: alloy identification on every incoming load, real-time scrap sorting by composition, PMI verification before material gets blended or melted.
Same problem, same answer — portable XRF. The ProSpector 3 reads precious metals on PCBs, identifies alloy grades on scrap, flags Pb / Cd / Hg / Br in plastics, and sorts WEEE fragments by chemistry. All in seconds, on the spot, without sending samples to a lab.
Find us at booth D135. Bring questions. Bring something to test.

Element Spotlight: Tantalum
Named after Tantalus — the figure from Greek mythology condemned to stand forever in water he could never drink, beneath fruit he could never reach. The chemist who isolated it in 1802 chose the name because tantalum is one of the most stubborn elements in the periodic table: it refuses to react, even when immersed in acids that dissolve almost everything else.
A few things about this stubborn metal you might not know:
→ Every smartphone, laptop, and gaming console you've ever owned contains it. Tantalum capacitors are what let modern electronics shrink while still holding charge.
→ It's one of the four "conflict minerals" (the 3TG: Tin, Tungsten, Tantalum, Gold), with much of global supply traced to coltan ore from Central Africa.
→ Melting point: 3,017°C. That's over 1,500°C higher than steel. It doesn't budge under heat.
→ It's biocompatible. Some bone screws, surgical plates, and dental implants are made from tantalum because the human body doesn't reject it.
→ A growing market for tantalum wedding rings exists — for people who want a metal denser than gold, harder than steel, and (statistically) already sitting in their pocket.
One element. Three centuries of stubbornness. Quietly running the device you're reading this on.

Six days until EXRS 2026 — the European Conference on X-ray Spectroscopy — opens in Catania, Italy.
Since 2002, Elvatech has been a continuous sponsor of EXRS, edition after edition. The same commitment to the international community that drives X-ray science forward.
This year's conference runs 14–19 June at Le Ciminiere — a 19th-century sulphur refinery rebuilt as a congress centre, brick chimneys still standing as a tangible link to Sicily's mining heritage. A fitting venue for a week on the fundamentals and applications of X-ray science.
Synchrotron imaging. Fundamental parameters. TXRF and GIXRF techniques. AI in spectrometry. Applications across cultural heritage, geosciences, biology, environment, energy materials, industrial production.
Our analyzers are designed and built in Kyiv — but X-ray spectroscopy is an international science, and EXRS is where that community gathers in person. If you'll be in Catania, find us. Talk technique, talk applications, tell us what you wish XRF could measure that it currently can't.

Euro-6 diesel allows 10 ppm of sulfur. Most analyzers can confirm whether your sample meets that limit. ElvaX S Lab detects down to 2 ppm — and analyzes chlorine, zinc, calcium, and barium with the same instrument, no separate calibrations, no second device.
New video on our YouTube channel walks through the full workflow on real samples: calibration selection, diesel fuel analysis, oil sample testing — start to finish.
Behind the speed: a high-resolution SDD detector with DAS DPP signal processing — faster than traditional pulse processors, with detection limits low enough that "below the regulatory ceiling" stops being a question and starts being the baseline.
The real advantage isn't a single element, though. It's that one ElvaX S Lab replaces what used to require multiple specialized instruments — sulfur, chlorine, metals — on separate machines, with separate operators, separate calibrations. For fuel labs and lubricant QC: more throughput, fewer instruments to maintain, faster results to the customer.

Made in Kyiv. On display in Tunis.
Our partner Global Lab represented Elvatech at the trade show in Tunis this week, bringing the full XRF lineup to the floor — ProSpector 3, ProSpector 2, ELVAX Pro, and ELVAX Plus — covering alloy ID, scrap sorting, cement QC, and lead-in-paint analysis.
What stood out is how completely Globallab has localized the conversation for the Tunisian market — product positioning, application framing, and the on-stand tagline that says it best:
"Contrôlez la qualité avant qu'elle ne vous coûte cher."
Control quality before it costs you.
That's what a real partnership looks like. We build the analyzers in Kyiv. Partners like Globallab take them into industries thousands of kilometres away — in the right language, with the right framing, for the audience that actually uses them.
Thank you, Globallab — for the booth, the presence, and for carrying Elvatech across North Africa.
