Stainless steel 304 and 316. Identical in color, hardness, weight, and surface finish. Different in chloride corrosion resistance — one survives marine and chemical service, one cracks within years.
So do A36 carbon steel and A572 high-strength steel. So do duplex 2205 and super duplex 2507 (which costs 3x more).
Mill markings fade. Heat numbers wear off. Warehouses mislabel racks. International mill certificates sometimes don't match the actual material in the crate.
ASME Section IX and AWS D1.1 require Positive Material Identification before welding critical applications. The code mandates the verification — it doesn't mandate the method.
Lab-based PMI: 2–5 days turnaround, $80–150 per sample.
Portable XRF: 3–5 seconds on the shop floor, $2–3 per test.
For a pressure vessel fabricator handling 50–100 different material heats monthly, that's the difference between continuous verification and a permanent bottleneck before fabrication starts.
One missed mix-up has cost real fabricators a $400K vessel replacement, a $1.5M sour-gas pipeline failure, and in one case the loss of an ASME certification stamp.
