When I first got to Mikiiga, it was heartbreaking to see—mangoes everywhere, ripe. just rotting on the ground. There were so many, but no proper way to preserve them. What should’ve been a blessing for the community was turning into waste. It hit me hard, especially knowing how much food insecurity affects our villages.

But things started to shift when we brought a hybrid solar dryer to the village. That simple setup changed everything. Instead of mangoes going bad, they’re now being dried and stored. It’s not just about having food during off-seasons anymore—people are also earning from selling dried mangoes.

The has played a huge role in making this happen.

What I’ve seen in Mikiiga is proof that sustainable tools and community efforts can change lives. It’s powerful to witness that kind of transformation right here, in places like .

Hey everyone — a quick (and honest) update from our end.

We’ve hit a bit of a delay with the hybrid solar dryer. The goal was to improve the drying trays to boost performance and durability, and we looked into some high-tech options. One company from the US quoted us $80,000 for the FDA a proved heat absorption trays, and another from India quoted $20,000 — still way out of reach for us right now.

So, we’ve made the call to stick with our original wooden trays and focus on preserving and optimizing them locally. It’s not the upgrade we hoped for, but it’s what makes sense for the moment — sustainable, cost-effective, and still very functional
