Don't forget about that crawlspace!

A crawlspace is part of your home's indoor climate also. Keep it healthy with a dehumidifier. This 130 pint per day by April Aire should help with that.

ATTENTION HEAT PUMP OWNERS!!!

When freezing rain, sleet, snow and ice start accumulating on the ground, trees and roads, it is also drawn into your Heat Pump. As your heat pump draws in surrounding air it robs the heat from the air, expelling it out roughly 20°F cooler that what it entered. During inclement weather conditions like what we are expecting this weekend, ice can accumulate in such a manner that a normal defrost cycle cannot deal with it.

If you start to notice abnormal ice accumulation on you Heat Pump during this weather event, simply switch the thermostat to "Emergency Heat" until weather warms and outdoor temperatures rise to a level above which the ice will melt on its own. If you have any questions, concerns or if you feel that there is an immediate need for your system, please contact me @ 864-389-9001

Below pictures are prime examples of a normal Heat Pump System forced to operate under such conditions. There's nothing wrong with this system! This was solely due to a mild freezing rain. Normal icing occurs from the coil, outward. This type of icing forms a shell around both surfaces of the coil and the cabinet, eventually obstructing even the fan rotation.

Thought it might be interesting to show a Pittsburgh machine in action. This machine is used to join two pieces of sheet metal together in ductwork. It creates a pocket with an extended straight fl**ge. A second piece of sheet metal with a standing fl**ge of 1/4" is inserted into the pocket and the extended straight fl**ge is then hammered over to create a pressure class joint. This is very useful in creating longitudinal joints that make up rectangular ductwork and plenums.

Another day in the books. It was a hot one and in full sun all day. This packaged gas/AC system by American Standard should cool things off a bit.

There was so much going on here and all of it was wrong. #1- A 16"x20"x1" filter was not large enough to accommodate good airflow. #2- The pleated filter was compounding that problem. #3- The filter had no framed opening in which to rest. It was simply suspended by these straps which meant that dirt and debris could be pulled in around all sides. #4- the return duct came out of the bottom of this shallow box and was shearing so as to reduce the duct size which further reduced airflow and increased negative static pressure.

The new setup accommodates an adequately sized 20"x30"x1" stage loading floss filter. This filter also rests on a frame placed on a slant within the return box. The return duct now exits directly towards the equipment with no restrictions. The good thing is that all of this was accomplished without disrupting the original structure or aesthetics of the home.

One of the very First systems I installed back in 2012. Needed a capacitor and washing. Good for another 12 years.
