What's the Best Way to Clean Heavy Equipment?

If you have heavy equipment and either are washing it yourself, or are looking for a pressure washing contractor, you might be wondering what exactly is the best method to get it all clean.

Every machine owner or power wash tech probably has his own way of cleaning a piece of heavy equipment, but here's some tips to make sure the job is done right and as quickly as possible.

Before I get into details, though, I have to address the variety of machine owner considerations, such as how often to clean and degrease an excavator or other piece of construction equipment.

Some owners and companies clean their equipment as rarely as a year or more and some monthly. As you can imagine, this can drastically change the amount of time and effort that goes into getting a machine clean. Pressure washing by itself will not clean and degrease an excavator, backhoe or any other piece of machinery. Power alone will not do it and too much power in the wrong places can push grease out of important wear areas.

Grease, over time will begin to harden, likely making it necessary to scrape it off areas around knuckles and on booms. The drier parts will not move with only high pressure, no matter how much you wash it.

These areas must be degreased using a suitable cleaner, and usually takes more time than the actual washing process. What that soap, or degreaser is, can have a lot to do with where you are washing the equipment and what the local and federal laws are.

Is it bio-degradeable? Is it acidic or alkaline? Where are the residues going? How are the hydrocarbons managed? For instance, lets say you have a wash bay with an oil/water separator. Do you know if the degreaser or soaps you are using are going to cause problems with the process of removing the oil from the water.

Hot water pressure washing has advantages over cold water cleaning. First, hot water is itself a kind of detergent, which means it can break down dirt, grease and oil by itself. Adding a good high pressure soap can then be more efficient, allowing you to use less, and reducing the amount of runoff, water used, and the soap on the ground, which is always better for the local environment.

Powering off dirt and grease with cold water takes much longer to achieve a satisfactory result and again, uses much more degreaser and soap.

IMPORTANT: Keep your tracks as clean as you can between equipment cleaning as heavily compacted mud and vegetation in and around the tracks of a machine like an excavator can take as long or longer than the entire rest of the machine.

This is even more important in the winter and the early spring. Wet mud, pieces of tree limbs, and branches and freezing can stop you dead in your tracks. And this will take even longer to get you free. So the operator should, at free times, make sure that the tracks are regularly attended to.

Lastly, is it cost effective to clean your equipment? If you are not particularly busy and you have a good hot water pressure washing machine, then yes, it is. But if you are busy and you're paying wages to an operator who is better at land clearing than equipment washing, and thinks the job is beneath him, the answer is no.

A qualified professional tech, can degrease and pressure wash a machine faster and better, which can actually mean a cost savings, rather than an additional expense.

So the next time you want to get that excavator, backhoe, dump truck or what have you, all clean, you might just want to call a professional pressure washing service that uses hot water. If there's no on site water, ask them if they are able to carry their own water, and how much experience they have cleaning heavy equipment.

And whether you're located in Vancouver British Columbia, Dallas Texas, or Minot North Dakota, make sure you comply with your local and national eco standards.

Grease removal

Oil and grease spots on concrete, asphalt, and other paved surfaces pose both environmental and safety hazards. The powerful combination of high heat pressure cleaners and specially formulated degreasers can battle even the toughest instances of oil and grease staining.

Hot water washers or steam cleaning pressure washers are the most effect tools for grease removal because of the high heat involved. Water temperatures above 180 degrees help lift oil from the surface. High heat also increases the ability of chemical solutions to dissolve and emulsify grease and oil so it can then be flushed from the surface.

The force with which water is pushed through a restrictive nozzle gives pressure washers their effective cleaning power. The sheer power of pressure washing allows cold water to remove dirt, debris, and other organic stains from many surfaces, but oil and grease removal requires high heat as well. Without the application of extremely high heat, oil clings tenaciously to surfaces, and degreasers have little chance of dissolving or emulsifying grease at all. Only after oil and grease are released from the surface can degreasers go to work lifting and removing remaining contaminants. Depending on the type of surface cleaner you can use the pressure between 1000 and 4000 PSI. Keep in mind, pressure washers with higher gallons per minute output will achieve the faster cleaning times.
The combination of hot water pressure washing with an alkaline degreasing solution is one method of grease removal. Steam pressure washers are another very effective option. These specially designed washers use the power of steam expansion to force water through the cleaner’s nozzle at near boiling temperatures. Steam expansion also increases the velocity of the water being propelled. Specially designed steam cleaning nozzles further harness the energy of steam v***r for superior oil and grease removal.

Safety precautions must be taken when using any pressure washer, but the high heat and hazardous nature of the chemicals involved in grease removal demand extra caution and considerable practice to avoid injury.

To clean concrete effectively, use a power washer with a pressure rating of at least 3000 psi and a flow rate of at least 4 gallons per minute (gpm). Although higher pressures may be required to remove tough contaminants such as paint and heavy tire-skid marks, most power-washing contractors agree that 3000 psi will do the trick for almost all cleaning jobs.

Once an adequate water pressure is established, flow rate determines the cleaning speed, especially how fast contaminants are flushed from the surface."You can blast at 10,000 psi, but if you have a flow of only 2 gallons per minute, you're going to have a pile of mud sitting there," says Barry Woods of Hydro Pressure Systems, North Hollywood, Ca. Heavily soiled concrete, therefore, requires higher flow rates.

Several contractors recommend a power washer with a volume output of 5 or 6 gpm. When cleaning vertical surfaces, higher flow rates are not as critical because gravity helps contaminants flow from the surface.

Cleaning speed also can be increased by using a rotary nozzle instead of a standard fan nozzle. To produce a fan pattern, standard nozzles deflect the water on an angle, which slows the water down. Rotary nozzles spin an undeflected water jet in a circular path, so the water leaves the nozzle with greater speed.

To improve cleaning speed on large flatwork areas, many manufacturers offer wheel-mounted power washers that resemble a lawn mower. Within the metal housing are nozzles mounted on spinning bars. According to Larry Hinckley, general manager of Delco Cleaning Systems, Fort Worth, Texas, workers using standard power-washing wands can clean roughly 900 square feet the first hour but the workers tire and and become less productive as the day progresses. Using a walk-behind washer, he says, workers can clean 3,000 square feet per hour and maintain that productivity throughout the day.

Is it Best to Use Hot or Cold Water to Clean Concrete?

Cold-water power washers are cheaper, lighter, and simpler to use than hot-water units, which require a heavy heating coil and burner system to heat the water. Whereas a cold-water unit may cost $2,000 and weigh 200 pounds, a comparable hot-water unit often will cost more than $3,000 and weigh more than 400 pounds.

However, hot water cleans faster than cold water, and this rule holds true for power washing. Although cold-water units are suitable for removing dirt and often suffice for smaller, residential applications, most commercial power-washing contractors believe that using hot water is worth the added expense. "The reduced labor costs will more than offset the cost of hot water," says Hinckley. "You don't want to be penny-wise and dollar dumb."

The benefits of hot water are especially clear when cleaning oil and grease. "The hot water helps lift the oil off the concrete, especially in cold weather," says Jeff Paulding, president of Dirt Killer Pressure Washers, Owings Mills, Md.

Cleaning Concrete Disposal Requirements

Depending on the power-washing chemicals used and the contaminants removed from the concrete, water runoff may be prohibited from entering storm sewers. Municipal codes vary greatly depending on the location. Some regulations, for example, require all discharge to be hauled to a waste-disposal site. Check with the local Environmental Protection Agency office for information on disposal requirements.

All power washers require routine maintenance because the high-pressure water wears out seals, O-rings, springs, and other components. But you can avoid excessive maintenance costs by following these operating tips:

Never run the pressure washer without water. This will cause premature failure of the pump seals.

Don't run the power washer in bypass for more than a few minutes (the unit is running but the trigger is not depressed). The water circulates in a closed loop and heats up quickly. Most pumps have a thermal-relief valve, but if the valve fails, the pump can be damaged.

Make sure the water source provides the volume of water needed by the pump. If it doesn't, the pump will suck in air, which can damage the pump. The first sign of air in the pump is a loss of pressure and a hammering noise.

The Advantages of Hot Water Pressure Washers over Cold Water Pressure Washers

We all know that pressure washers are one of the most efficient power tools that we should have. With this cleaning tool, you will be able to clean almost any type of surface easily and efficiently. For example, if you don’t like to remove mush and leaves from your gutter or you hate to clean up the patio after a big backyard barbecue party or you are really not that enthusiastic about cleaning the grease and oil spill in your garage, then the pressure washer is for you.

With a pressure washer, you can easily blast those leaves and much in your gutter and you will also be able to clean your dirty patio as well as clean your garage easily. However, if you need a pressure washer for heavy duty cleaning, then it is highly recommended that you get a hot water pressure washer.

Hot water pressure washer will enable you clean a lot more efficiently and at a faster rate. There are so many advantages of hot water pressure washer over conventional cold water pressure washer.

Mainly, it is able to clean a lot more efficiently and faster because it ejects super heated water at very high pressure. For example, if you clean surfaces covered in grease with cold water pressure washer, it will eventually harden the grease and produce a waxy surface that will even be harder to remove. In fact, it will even make the job of cleaning it a lot tougher.

On the other hand, if you use hot water pressure washer, the heated water will soften the grease and even melt the ones that have hardened on the surface. The pressure will simply blast and wash the grease away.

This means that hot water pressure washers are perfect for cleaning garages where the floors are almost certainly covered in grease and oil from the car. It will also do a great job in cleaning the grime and grease on your patio’s floor left behind by your barbecue grill.

Although hot water pressure washer costs more than conventional cold water pressure washer, you will find that this is a better deal. Not only because it will make cleaning a lot more efficient but it will also make the surface it cleans disinfected.

The super heated water ejected by the pressure washer will eventually kill bacteria and other microscopic living organisms on the surface.

So, with a hot water pressure washer, you will not only get to clean the surface more efficiently but also kill disease causing bacteria.

If you have the cash for it, you might want to get a hot water pressure washer that also has a high pressure steam option. The highly pressurized steam is very effective if you use it for specific types of heavy duty cleaning jobs.

Super heated and pressurized steam coming out of the pressure washer are so efficient in cleaning that you won’t even need to use chemical degreasers or other cleaning chemicals to do the job.

As you can see, there are so many benefits that hot water and super heated steam pressure washers. They are much more efficient in cleaning and they will also disinfect the surface while doing so.
