Glidden, Iowa. What an amazing town. Glidden’s mission? “To enhance residents’ lives by providing quality services at a reasonable expense.” Caliber Concrete knows how serious the town takes this mission. An aquatic center, three major parks, a library, a trail system, and a butterfly garden. Glidden and its residents are certainly doing something right.

Oh did I mention that they also have a Medal of Honor recipient? Ralph G. Neppel received the military’s highest decoration for his actions in World War II shortly before the Battle of the Bulge.

Anyway, when we read on the 1380KCMI website that we had indeed won the bid to replace the west 6th street surface and to pour new concrete located on the western edge of town we were excited. However, we knew we couldn’t waste much time. While the project was active a dozen or so homes were going to be inaccessible by vehicle. We knew time could not be wasted. Having said that.

We would like to give a special thanks to those homeowners who were affected by the street improvements. You showed tremendous patience.

Stay you, Glidden.

Recently we did a project in Clive for a park. Canary Park and the reasoning for the name is quite interesting.

Serving mostly as a neighborhood park. Canary Park was selected as its name due to its historical connections to The Shuler Mines located in the area that opened in 1921 and ceased operations in 1949.

Miners would carry down caged canaries (birds) into the mine tunnels with them. If dangerous gases such as carbon monoxide collected in the mine, the gases would kill the canary before killing the miners, thus providing a warning to exit the tunnels immediately.

Fascinating stuff. We get to create and build some pretty amazing things but the history that we learn from some of our projects is just as amazing.

Recently Caliber Concrete worked with the City of Urbandale to help make The All-Inclusive Playground a reality so that children of all ages and abilities had a fun and safe place to play.

The City of Urbandale did a wonderful job putting a video together about the new playground. We’re sure the video will put a smile on your face.

Recently we did a project working in Greene County, Iowa for the Greene County Conservation Department. We admit it was pretty cool to be working along the Racoon River Valley Trail for this project. Some of the places where you can see our work is in Cooper, Winkleman Switch, and the Depot in Jefferson.

Fun fact: Greene County Conservation currently manages 19 areas (parks, trails, wildlife management areas, and river accesses) encompassing some 1,549 acres. Greene County is also home to the second oldest county park (Squirrel Hollow) in Iowa.

A few photos from that project.
