When a machine goes down, is putting a sign on it the beginning of your response, or the end?

Equipment problems are part of running a laundromat. A clear process helps keep them from becoming a forgotten note on a washer.

Have attendants record which machine is affected and what they observed. They don't need to be technicians to report a symptom. Make sure that information gets to the person arranging service, and update the machine's status after the repair.

LaundryCard lets staff mark equipment out of service and select a reason that an owner can review remotely. Even without that feature, every store needs a dependable way to report problems and follow through.

Take a look at the customer-facing sign as well. A neat, easy-to-read notice with a thoughtful message can look much better than a yellow sticky note. Keep it clear that the machine is unavailable.

Your attendant is working on a wash-dry-fold order. A customer needs help, and there's also a safety concern in the store. Do they know what to put down first?

Safety comes first. After that, your staff needs clear direction about how you want customer service and order work prioritized.

Don't assume their priorities match yours just because they're staying busy. Some employees naturally gravitate toward the tasks they're most comfortable doing.

Document your expectations, talk through common shift situations, and check back to see how it's working. This is especially important when you're not in the store every day.

The next time you ask a laundromat customer how their visit is going, try going beyond “Everything good?”

That question is easy to answer with a quick yes, even when something was confusing or frustrating.

Ask one question that invites a real explanation: “What was the hardest part of getting started today?” or “What could we make easier on your next visit?”

Keep it friendly. Let them finish. The details may show you where instructions, the payment process or another part of the visit could be clearer.

You don't need to ask a whole list of questions. One useful conversation can give you something practical to work on.
