This weather is super nice, but, some parts of our house are just as confused by it as we are!

Rain in December combined with melting snow puts significant stress on sump pumps! This can potentially cause failure due to frozen discharge lines, power outages, or the pump being overwhelmed; leading to basement flooding. Proper winter maintenance is key!! Some photos from today showing the magnitude of ice damming this year.

We are seeing large, very solid ice dams over substantial portions of the roof. We are seeing interior water infiltrations that are happening faster and more wide spread with these sunny days accompanied by the freezing temperatures. Look how wet that insulation is! We are quickly approaching ice damming season!! โ„๏ธโ˜ƒ๏ธ Our guys are ready to get out there. Check out some photos of them in action from the icey winter of 2023.

What are ice dams and what causes them?

Ice damming occurs when snow on a roofs surface that is above freezing will begin to melt from multiple factors including the radiating interior heat, changing outside temperatures, and sunshine. As the ice/snow melts and begins to flow down the roof, it reaches the portion along the edge that remains below 32 degrees fahrenheit and freezes again. This causes the ice dam to form and often leads to issues below the surface, in the interior of the home, as well as creating exterior safety isssues.

A good indicator of a potential ice dam? Large icicles forming along the roofs edge! Check out the example photo!
