Find your niche!
It’s very rare that we do a new shower remodel these days without putting in a niche. Most people want a place to put their shampoos and soap that isn’t the floor, a windowsill or an over the shower head carry all.
The question is – what kind of niche works for you?
The more room, the better. That’s what we’ve found with our clients. Just because you have more room, doesn’t mean you’re going to cram everything into that space. Spacing out your items gives you better access and is more appealing to the eye and easier to keep clean. After all, you just spent a lot of money redoing this space so make it work for you visually!
Is it tall enough to accommodate Costco-sized bottles? Again, you don’t have to put giant bottles on these shelves, but even products like Native body washes are fairly tall and need to fit sideways so the pump works for you. Pumps are great in the shower and most of the bottles with pumps are bigger. So make the opening tall enough.
Do you want one continuous opening, stacked openings, or various sized openings? Usually a niche is built in between the studs. If you want a long niche, your contractor will have to cut the studs and build a box to accommodate that space. Not a problem, but it will cost more than just finding the studs and putting the niche between them.
Do you want your niche to make a design statement? Many times clients will put one of the other tiles (floor, counter) in the niche to pull it all together. Other times, clients will put a unique tile (read more expensive) that stands out or adds a pop of color. The edges can be finished with a tile edging or a Schluter. A Schluter is a piece of metal or plastic that finishes the edge and comes in a variety of colors.
It seems like I’m paying a lot of attention to a small detail, but if you don’t think about it you might not get the full benefit of it. It’s actually going to be the most noticeable thing about your new shower, so give some thought to where, how big and what style your niche is going to be.
