PSA before you hire a deck builder:

The cheapest quote is usually missing something.

1. Things you probably won’t notice immediately- Missing hardware, undersized framing, footing depth, fastener types, improper ledger attachment, etc.

2. Things you WILL notice- Poor communication, no detailed scope of work provided, no explanation of process, sloppy craftsmanship, poor lumber quality, and maybe even a disappearing act by the contractor before the project is complete.

A deck can look good in photos and still be built wrong if you don’t know what to look for.

Alabaster Deck & Stair Replacement

Phase 1:
We removed a set of deteriorating brick steps that had become unsafe and replaced them with a structurally sound wood stair system, providing a safer and more reliable entry to the home.

Phase 2:
At the rear of the property, we replaced a 16’ x 10’ deck and added a patio cover, creating a durable outdoor space designed for year-round use and protection from the elements.

Each phase of this project was built with long-term performance in mind, focusing on proper structural integrity and top-tier craftsmanship.

Helena Deck Replacement

What a transformation on this deck in Helena! The old deck was extremely unsafe and only supported by the house sheathing. Not to mention the single brick “footings” that had sunk over 4”.

We corrected this by:
-Adding blocking for some lateral stability and ledger support girders. Instead of a brick to support the deck, we poured 18”x18”x18” footings with embedded rebar.

-Adding a mid-span stair landing which made the stairs much sturdier.

-Applying joist tape over all 2-ply materials. This prevents water intrusion between lumber plies greatly extending the life of the deck.

FRIDAY DECK TIP

Thinking about painting your deck? Read below👇

Paint is one of the worst things you can put on exterior structures such as decks and pergolas. While it may look good for a short period of time, paint forms a thick film on top of the wood that traps moisture underneath. Deck boards are constantly exposed to rain, humidity, and temperature swings, and they need to be able to breathe.

When paint seals the surface, moisture can’t escape. Over time this leads to peeling, flaking, mildew growth, and accelerated wood rot. Once a deck has been painted, it also becomes a maintenance nightmare because the only real way to fix it is grinding or fully stripping the paint.

What should you use instead?

A high-quality penetrating deck stain. Unlike paint, stain soaks into the wood fibers rather than sitting on top. This allows the wood to breathe while still providing protection from moisture, UV damage, and weather.

A good stain will:
• Protect the wood without trapping moisture
• Fade naturally instead of peeling
• Be much easier to maintain in the future

If your deck is already painted or coated with a “deck coat”, it’s time to start planning for a deck replacement.

The picture below shows exactly what a painted deck quickly turns in to. Once the paint dries, the timer starts ticking at 10x speed.

This is what we found supporting a 2nd story deck we’re replacing…

One brick sitting in the mud.

That was the entire “foundation” holding up the structure.

No footing.
No concrete.
No reinforcement.

Over time, setups like this slowly sink and shift with the soil until the deck becomes unstable. By the time homeowners notice the problem, the structure is usually already failing. This specific deck had sunk over 4”.

Unfortunately, we see this kind of thing more often than you’d think when replacing decks.

When we build a deck, the work you don’t see is just as important as what you do see.

That means:

• Properly sized footings
• Reinforced concrete for strength
• Correct depth for Alabama soil conditions
• Structural support designed to carry the load safely

Our footings are a minimum of 480lbs of concrete poured over compacted soil and reinforced with a rebar grid.

A deck is only as good as the foundation it sits on.

If your deck feels soft, uneven, or is more than 15–20 years old, it might be worth taking a look at what’s underneath.
