On the cover of Ocean News & Technology Magazine’s March issue: Unmanned naval defense demands battle-ready maritime autonomy built on proven platforms and payloads.

In a contributed article, Saildrone President VADM (ret.) John Mustin argues that the next phase of maritime autonomy will be defined not by distant concepts, but by systems that can be integrated, deployed, and scaled now. The piece makes the case for proven autonomous platforms, combat-tested payloads, and modular capabilities that give commanders more flexible options in the field.

“[Saildrone and Lockheed Martin] collectively illustrate the best of operational autonomy when platform endurance, proven command and control, and combat-ready payloads converge. Not as a future concept, but as a deployed reality shaping today’s maritime security,” writes Mustin.

Winter operations in the Baltic Sea aren’t a demo—they’re our mission. Saildrone Voyagers continue to operate through freezing spray and sea ice—real-world conditions that quickly separate proven partners from those with “promising” claims of future technology.

This is operational reality: systems that work on day one and keep working for months, delivering persistent maritime awareness in harsh and remote environments. And it’s a reminder of how we frame Saildrone—capability forward, not platform forward—endurance, persistence, autonomy, and reliable data delivery that translates into decision advantage over time.

Predictable gaps in surveillance are an adversary’s best friend. In the Baltic Sea, Saildrone is closing those gaps by providing round-the-clock surface and subsurface awareness.

The integration of Innomar's sub-bottom profiling technology allows the Saildrone Voyager USV to detect changes beneath the seafloor that may indicate tampering with critical undersea infrastructure. With over 20,000 nautical miles logged in the region already, Saildrone is committed to providing the persistent oversight needed to protect vital energy and communication networks.

As of today, only 27.3% of the ocean is mapped in high-resolution. Saildrone and Woolpert are adding 13,000 square nautical miles to that number, surveying around the Mariana Islands and Mariana Trench for NOAA Ocean Exploration and NOAA Coast Survey.

We’re delivering accurate seafloor data that supports safe navigation, habitat insight, and geohazard understanding (think earthquakes and tsunamis).

This will help close critical gaps in the US EEZ—and push progress toward a fully mapped ocean.

What does operational autonomy actually look like at sea? In a new blog by Saildrone President John Mustin, we look at how Saildrone USVs continue to operate alongside US Navy Task Force 59 and coalition navies across the Middle East—turning operational reality into sustained maritime awareness.

“Saildrone’s proven track record includes continuous operations during chaotic regional events and complex environmental demands. While operating in the Red Sea and Arabian Gulf, Saildrone platforms regularly overcome drastic temperature changes, navigate dense maritime traffic, and remain on mission despite extreme sea states.”

Over the past six months in the Baltic Sea, Saildrone has detected more than 170,000 unique vessels, sailed over 20,000 nautical miles, and achieved 92% uptime across its fleet under a range of harsh weather and sea states, far exceeding typical availability benchmarks for unmanned systems.

The Baltic and North Seas are strategically crucial waterways, but with long coastlines, vast exclusive economic zones, and limited onshore surveillance systems, coastal nations often lack the resources to continuously monitor threats. To address these maritime challenges, the Danish Ministry of Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organisation (DALO) enlisted Saildrone to operate four Voyager unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) in support of the Royal Danish Navy.

The results have been dramatic and represent a step change in how presence at sea can be sustained. Read the full story on what persistent, autonomous presence looks like in real-world maritime operations: https://go.saildrone.com/4qgLmUe

Persistence is the platform superpower. 💪

Saildrone is adapting our proven USVs to meet our customers’ requirements—today. Electronic warfare, signals intelligence, RF, and active sensors. As Saildrone President John Mustin told Naval News, there are a million missions we can do.

“But what we want to focus on are the things that solve problems for our customers … it’s a chocolate meets peanut butter kind of moment, taking the world’s most proven USV and adding to it capabilities that give our warfighters what they need.”

Saildrone and Lockheed Martin have partnered to field lethal capabilities at the pace and scale the U.S. Navy demands. The first tangible step in this partnership will be to equip the 20-meter Saildrone Surveyor with Lockheed Martin’s proven and prolific JAGM launcher.
