An 86.48 MWh Battery Energy Storage System is currently under construction in Kern County, California, helping strengthen grid reliability across the region. The Gaskell West Storage project is part of a broader solar‑plus‑storage development, paired with two solar facilities already in operation.

The project is owned by Matrix Renewables, with BEI Construction serving as the EPC contractor. Our team is responsible for the design, engineering, procurement, construction, testing, and commissioning of the BESS installation, which includes 27 battery enclosures.

Energy storage systems like this play a critical role in capturing excess renewable generation and delivering power when demand is highest, supporting a more flexible and resilient energy grid.

At BEI, safety is how we get work done every day. Through training, tailgate meetings, and field engagement, our teams stay focused on doing the work the right way.

As part of that effort, we introduced a hard hat recognition series this year, built around four ideas: mindset, ownership, teamwork, and commitment.

The goal is simple: perform work safely and go home at the end of the day.

In 2021, our team delivered the electrical installation for the Vallecito project, a 10 MW / 40 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Carpinteria, California.

Located at the end of a transmission-constrained corridor, this standalone storage system provides flexible, dispatchable capacity to support grid stability and respond to peak demand in a region with limited power delivery flexibility.

The project was part of three large-scale BESS facilities delivered by BEI Construction that year, totaling 65 Tesla Megapacks installed: Vallecito (10 MW / 40 MWh); Silverstrand (11 MW / 44 MWh) in Camarillo, CA; and Agua Fria (25 MW / 100 MWh) in Glendale, AZ.

Each project plays a role in strengthening grid reliability and enabling greater integration of renewable energy across the system.

Walden West Outdoor School & Summer Camp, in the Santa Cruz Mountains, focuses on environmental education and uses onsite solar energy to support hands-on STEAM learning.

This program is part of a broader initiative to install solar systems across several Santa Clara County Office of Education (SCCOE) facilities, helping public sites lower energy costs and support long-term sustainability, while also creating real-world learning opportunities for students.

The effort is led by a partnership between OPTERRA Energy Services and SCCOE, with BEI Construction delivering 1.32 MW of solar PV across three sites by installing 2,388 modules on solar carports and rooftop systems.

San Francisco is seeing the strongest year-over-year growth in office visits among major U.S. cities.
