🇺🇸 Freedom 250:

📆On this day… British Surrender at the Battle of Saratoga – Oct. 17, 1777

One of the most decisive battles of the Revolutionary War, Saratoga (September–October 1777) featured the brilliant tactics of Polish military engineer Colonel Thaddeus Kościuszko, who engineered critical defensive fortifications at Bemis Heights. By mastering the terrain and channeling British forces into lopsided engagements, engineering served as the operational linchpin that secured the American victory, convinced France to enter the war as an American ally, and established the enduring USACE doctrine: engineering creates decisive military advantage.

Utilizing entrenchments, redoubts, and natural bluffs the colonial engineers denied British forces control of the Hudson River corridor.

British General John Burgoyne was forced into unfamiliar, constricted terrain because Kościuszko’s fortifications made a direct frontal assault along the river impossible. After heavy losses at Bemis Heights, Burgoyne surrendered his entire force of 6,000 soldiers on October 17,1777.

Today, building off those hard-fought battles during the Revolutionary War, USACE delivers forward-deployed terrain analysis, base camp construction, and force protection engineering across all combatant commands.

We appreciate everyone who supported our booth at the 🎈earlier this month‼️

Thousands of people stopped by the booth over the course of the nine-day fiesta and received water safety giveaways and information. Items included whistles, Bobber the Water Safety Dog trading cards and activity books, Junior Ranger stickers, waterproof pouches, candy, and brochures on topics including how to ensure a proper life jacket fit and an overview of the things the Albuquerque District does in addition to recreation.

“A cool tidbit is that we have met a lot of folks who volunteer with USACE or work for USACE, but nowhere near here. We met folks from Portland all the way to New Hampshire who either work at or volunteer with USACE. We even met a gentleman who works for USACE in Japan,” said Phil Carrillo, chief of the district’s Technical Support Branch, and organizer of the district’s booth at the festival.

We’re looking forward to seeing everyone again next year!!

About the Position: You will serve as supervisor of the maintenance staff. Exercise full supervisory responsibility for the control of work operations involving approximately seven permanent and temporary employees.

Join us this Sat., Sept. 26 for National Public Lands Day events at our Lake - U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Albuquerque District and Cochiti Lake - U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Albuquerque District.

➡Abiquiu event:
Rangers will discuss invasive species and then staff and volunteers will do some invasive plant removal-specifically invasive Tamarisk and Bull Thistle. There will also be doing shoreline clean-up to help make the lake look pretty. Registration will begin at 9:30 am at Group Shelter 3, which is located on the boat ramp road near the playground. No pre-registration necessary. Snacks will be provided and volunteers will earn a free night of camping. Volunteers should wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for sun and insects. ➡Cochiti event:
Volunteers should meet at the Cochiti Lake Boat Ramp at 9 am on Saturday. No registration/pre-registration is necessary! The focus of the event is to do manual removal of submerged aquatic invasive vegetation (Eurasian Milfoil) and debris/trash clean up. Rakes will be provided. Bring a kayak or watercraft if desired. • Dam operation: Collect humidity, temperature and wind velocity readings from weather instruments. Make gate settings to regulate outflow of water. Perform routine maintenance and repair.
