When the job gets busy, the basics still matter. Missing required operator certification, skipping inspections, or ignoring load charts can put the whole crew at risk.

Before getting to work, take time to:
✅ Verify required operator credentials.
✅ Complete required equipment inspections.
✅ Review the correct load chart for the planned lift.

Do you need certification to operate a crane? 🏗️

Yes, in most construction settings. OSHA requires operators of covered cranes to be certified or licensed under 29 CFR 1926.1427. One certification pathway is through a crane operator testing organization accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency.

The federal crane operator certification requirement took effect on November 10, 2018.

Some equipment is excluded. Check 1926.1400(c) for equipment outside the rule and 1926.1427(a)(2) for exceptions to operator certification requirements. Employers must also ensure operators receive the required training and evaluation.

Safety tip: Keep the signal clear and the lift controlled.

Before a lift begins, the operator and signal person should know who is giving directions and which signals they’ll use. When several people try to direct the same crane, a simple movement can become a dangerous misunderstanding.

One signal person at a time. Clear signals. A crew that knows when to stop and speak up. Under OSHA’s construction crane rule, anyone who spots a safety problem can give a stop or emergency stop signal.

Take a moment to confirm the plan before the load moves. The whole crew benefits when everyone knows what the signals mean.
