Horsepower and torque ratings are based on a unity service factor (1.0) as defined in the table below. The ratings given in the tables are surface durability capacities and do not take into account any thermal limits.

As the figure below demonstrates, Helicon and Spiroid tooth pressure angles are not symmetrical. However, Helicon and Spiroid gearing operate at approximately the same efficiency and load rating in either direction of pinion rotation. This, despite the fact that direction and magnitude of the forces on the teeth are different.
These forces tend to separate the pinion and gear teeth. They are largely in the axial direction of the pinion but there are also force components working in the radial direction of the pinion. With respect to the pinion, this radial component is greater when the driving is done on the high-pressure-angle side of the tooth.

Generally, due to bearing life considerations – and to extract the most from Spiroid’s gearing technology – it is preferable in single-direction drives to do the driving on the low-pressure-angle side of the pinion thread.

See description of this within ‘Tooth Load Components’ under ‘Process Deliverables’.

Proper alignment is critical for maximized gear set performance. In preparation for assembly of the gear set, the housing should be inspected using the following guidelines.

The center distance, “A” dimension shown below, should be within ±0.001 inch per inch. (For example, a 3.000 inch center distance would have a tolerance of ±0.003 inch.)

The alignment of the bores, which will locate the pinion and gear, should also be checked. The shaft angle (usually 90˚) should be within ±5’. Deviation from the nominal shaft angle will cause a contact pattern shift between the assembled pinion and gear. Heavy localized contact toward the inner or outer band of gear teeth is not desirable.

“Stick slip” occurs when a self-locking gear set achieves overhauling mode. That is to say it occurs when the gear, for whatever reason, begins to drive the pinion.

To avoid the stick-slip phenomenon when designing a gearbox, it is important to design it in such a way that the cumulative mass moment of inertia of the input (pinion) side is always greater than the cumulative mass moment of inertia of the output (gear) side.

Need BIG Torque in a small space? We can help.

If you have an application requiring Spiroid’s unique blend of big torque in a small form factor, we’d love to hear about it!

Lead times associated with discovery and communication are minimized with a completed Application Data Sheet. We look forward to the discussion.

A Helicon or Spiroid gear set is either left or right-handed. The “Hand” is determined by the direction of the pinion thread (clockwise/counterclockwise). The two images below illustrate relative pinion positions for both left and right-hand systems, enabling design flexibility.
