Original Sixteen to One Mine, Inc. The Sixteen to One Mine was located in Alleghany, CA by Thomas Bradbury in 1896. Incorporated in 1911, the Original Sixteen to One Mine, Inc.

is
the oldest, continuously-operated gold mine in
the United States. More than a million ounces have been mined from the depths of the Sixteen to One Mine making it a major gold deposit. The mine has been operated continuously since it was located in 1896 although the size of the crew has varied dramatically. The largest crew was during the great depression (1930s) when the mine had 100 employees

working two 12-hours shifts around the clock. In recent times employment peaked at 50 in 1997. Currently a minimal crew (3 to 6 men) works the mine. Hardrock gold mines in Sierra County’s Alleghany District differ from typical Mother Lode mines: they are “feast or famine” operations. Sporadic yet rich pockets are dispersed within the otherwise barren quartz vein. The payoffs in these pockets can be spectacular, and indeed the Sixteen to One Mine holds the record for the state’s three richest gold pocket discoveries. Two of these pockets were mined in the 1920’s and brought in 89,000 and 48,000 ounces respectively. The third pocket was mined in the 1930’s and brought in 36,000 ounces. ($1,200 x 36,000 = $43,200,000)

Modern day mining produced the Million Dollar Day in 1993 (2,500 ounces) and the Two Million Dollar stope in 1995 (5,000 ounces mined in four shifts). At $1,200 per ounce that would be a 3 million dollar day and a 6 million dollar stope. The most recent substantial pocket was in 2004 at 1,468 ounces. Production has been minimal since 2004 but the possibility of another pocket keeps the mine going. Hopefully this document will need to be updated for a new find soon! A rare gemstone…

Most unusual is the way in which the mine’s gold occurs. Doré (raw gold) from the Sixteen to One is 84% gold and 15% silver giving it a high luster. The snowy white quartz of the Sixteen to One Vein combined with the high luster doré creates a rare and beautiful gemstone. The gold/quartz gemstone brings in a premium above the spot price of gold without the expense associated with converting hardrock gold into bullion. The mine is also famous for its crystalline gold specimens coveted by collectors. Crystalline gold, free to express its external structure in its growth forms and surfaces, is extremely rare. Nearly 99% of gold produced in the world today comes from large ore bodies bearing only microscopic gold. Gold large enough to be seen with the naked eye is rare in modern ores. Gold in crystal form is even rarer as it requires special conditions for its formation within the earth.

After a welcome week of rain, temperatures have returned to warm and sunny. The California poppies are blooming over a month early here in Alleghany. As we officially say farewell to freezing weather, here's a photo from January 1997: "Our Ice Cavern" - looking out the 800 Tunnel in the dead of winter. Even in the brutal heat of summer, underground temperatures remain stable at around 52 degrees.

That gave us an idea. Thanks, Joseph! We scoured our old boxes of photographs for shots of the booth/exhibit the Sixteen to One indeed used to set up at the Nevada County Fair. Nothing from NC turned up yet, but we did find a similar event at the Plumas-Sierra County Fair! The date is unknown, but probably took place in the late 80s through 90s.

Here you can see the elevated setup for a gold pour, taking place at 3-6-and-9 o'clock, complete with a 5-gal bucket of flux. Drilling demonstrations/competitions were also a hit back in those days.

At a blistering 1,947°F, solid gold becomes pure, radiant liquid. Thanks to its immense surface tension - and a pinch of borax flux - the gold pools cohesively, pouring like heavy, glowing honey. The high-density graphite mold must be pre-heated (you can see the rectangular mold perched on the rim of the furnace next to the crucible). If the hot gold were to hit a cold mold, any microscopic moisture on the surface would instantly turn to steam, causing the molten metal to splatter violently. Pre-heating also prevents the ingot from cooling too rapidly and solidifying into uneven layers. (Painting by Sandra Miller)

On May 19th 2010 (15 years ago today!) local singer/songwriters Rita Hosking and Sean Feder journeyed underground at the Sixteen to One Mine. Their daughter, then 15-year-old Kora Feder, documented the day with her camera. With only one mic, several songs were recorded 1000 ft beneath the Sierra mountains. The CD (now out of print, but still available as a digital download) came to be known as "Live in the Sixteen to One Mine".

The song "When Miners Sang" was written specifically as an offering to this mine, for this day.

In response to various comments on our previous post, OSTO cannot answer questions about the mine (such as whether or not it has "reflooded") so long as our ongoing lawsuit with Quartzview remains in federal court. Please visit our website at original16to1.com for more details about the case.

This page is owned and operated, as it always has been, by OSTO president Michael Miller and staff.

What does "Sixteen to One" actually mean?

Sixteen to One - or 16:1 - was the arbitrary ratio of the number of ounces of silver equal in value to one ounce of gold in the bi-metallic monetary system established by Portugal in 1688. The ratio had profound effects on the world’s monetary arrangements for many years, and was adopted by the United States of America in 1792. The system was then dropped by the U.S. in 1873, enraging silver producers.

In his presidential campaign of 1896, William Jennings Bryan advocated a return to the Sixteen to One monetary system. Bryan ran against, and lost to William McKinley. Twice.

Here at the Original Sixteen to One Mine, its unusual silver content gives our high-grade gold its famously rich, "butter-yellow" luster prized by jewelers and collectors alike.
