What an incredible transformation at Alpena’s Bay View Park!

The new Bay View Sportsplex is officially complete, turning a worn-out section of the park into a modern destination for tennis, pickleball, basketball, and community gatherings—all in one of the best locations along Alpena’s Lake Huron shoreline.

This nearly half-million-dollar community project, spearheaded by the Friends of the Alpena Courts, includes multiple regulation-size courts, new lighting, fencing, windscreens, and a beautiful timber-frame pavilion built with western red cedar and reclaimed materials. The pavilion’s cedar-shake roof and copper-topped peak make it a standout addition to an already impressive facility.

Projects like this don’t happen without a tremendous amount of planning, fundraising, local craftsmanship, grant support, and people who believe in investing in their community. The result is a recreational space Alpena can enjoy and be proud of for many years to come.

Photic Zone recently had the opportunity to photograph the completed Sportsplex. Here are some of our favorite views from the photoshoot!

Lady Michigan on a cruise with clear air and calm waters. Alpena Shipwreck Tours

07/19/2026

A few views from above the Lady Michigan as she makes her way over one of Alpena’s many shipwrecks in Thunder Bay.

From the air, you get a completely different perspective on the clear water, the tour boat, and the history resting just below the surface. It’s easy to see why Alpena is known as the Shipwreck Capital of the Great Lakes.

A great day to be out on the water with Alpena Shipwreck Tours.

A lot is happening along Alpena’s waterfront today!

This morning’s 360° view from above WATZ Radio shows the marina filling up for the Michigan Brown Trout Festival, with boats heading out, food and festival activities along the harbor, and Kids Day running from 11:00 to 2:30. Just down the shoreline, The Thunder Bay Arts Council's Art on the Bay continues at Bay View Park until 4:00, featuring artists and craftspeople from around the region.

Take a spin around the photo and see how much of Alpena you can recognize. It’s a busy summer Sunday, with much cleaner air, on Thunder Bay!

🚢 A First for Alpena: Welcome AMERICAN PATRIOT! 🇺🇸

Alpena is rolling out the Lake Huron welcome mat as American Cruise Lines' AMERICAN PATRIOT makes her first visit to our port!

This new 130-guest ship is sailing American Cruise Lines' 2026 American Great Lakes Cruise, a 14-day journey between Buffalo, New York and Milwaukee, Wisconsin, with Alpena featured as one of the stops along the way.

For guests arriving here, Alpena offers exactly what makes the Great Lakes special: Thunder Bay, maritime history, shipwreck heritage, beautiful shoreline, and a friendly Northeast Michigan welcome.

The ship turned around at the mouth of the river and backed into port, docking in front of the Armory.

If you spot AMERICAN PATRIOT in port, give her passengers and crew a warm Alpena hello!

🚀 Exciting News from Photic.Zone!

Many of you know Photic.Zone for drone photography, underwater imaging, and capturing unique perspectives of Northeast Michigan. Today, I'm excited to announce the next chapter in our journey:

🎉 Photic.Zone is now offering 3D Printing Services!

Whether you need custom parts, prototypes, replacement pieces, unique gifts, hobby projects, or creative solutions to everyday problems, we can help bring your ideas to life...one layer at a time.

While cameras help us capture the world around us, 3D printing allows us to create something entirely new. It may seem like a different direction, but at its core, it's still about creativity, technology, and solving problems.

In the attached photos are some tick removal keys that I printed for a recent project.

Over the coming weeks, I'll be sharing examples of projects, materials, and possibilities. If you've ever thought, "I wish I had a part for that," or "I wonder if someone could make this," send me a message. You might be surprised what's possible.

Thanks to everyone who has supported Photic.Zone over the years. I can't wait to see where this new adventure takes us!
