There’s was never any doubt since the young age of 6 what my career choice would be. Ever since my cabin building days started in second grade I knew I would be in the building business as a hands on carpenter. Every week I would take my 2 dollar weekly allowance and walk 6 blocks to the local hardware store (Sutters Hardware)to buy whatever 2 dollars would buy me in nails!

I recently had an interesting as well as disturbing conversation with a 20 year old young man. He told me as a freshman at a local high school he was considering career options and wanted to tour the Altoona Career And Technology Center to explore career opportunities. He went to speak to the high school guidance counselor who told him the school could not give him approval to attend which was a requirement by the GACTC!! He was told his GPA was too high and would need to pursue a career in college education!!! He didn’t have a set career path but only wanted again to explore opportunities something very few young kids even think about at that point of there life and wasn’t even given the chance!!! Fortunately he is a very motivated young man with a superior work ethic and will do well in wherever his college education takes him. If I had been told the same thing at that same point of my life I would have had a few choice words for the high school guidance counselor!!
I followed up my high school training with 2 years of trade school training at the Williamsport Area Community College Now Pensylvania College of Technology. Upon Graduation I started my career in the custom home building industry with one of the top custom home builders in the area Harkless and DeBiase and eventually was self employed by 1990! After more than 35 years of self employment and nearly 40 years total in the business I still strap on a tool belt daily scale roofs trusses 30-40’ off the ground and do what I’ve love to do all my life!!

Society has everyone focused on a college degree in order to make anything of yourself!! Fortunately I was not told what I had to do and choose my own career path at such a young age!! The building trades alone across the board are a dying profession and have been for some time. Without us low intelligent workers in the building trades who is going to build all these fancy College Campuses, Doctors and Engineers offices as well as these fancy homes/vacation homes for business executives in the future?? We are the last generation of a dying breed with so few that have followed in our footsteps behind us!! College education isn’t for everyone!!!
