Alaska IBEW

Alaska IBEW The IBEW is among the world’s strongest labor organizations, representing workers in a range of skilled occupations in a wide variety of fields.

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers was founded in St. Louis, Missouri on November 28, 1891. IBEW Local 1547 was chartered in Alaska on October 1, 1946, assuming the jurisdiction of IBEW work in Alaska from Local 46 in Seattle, and continues to advocate for safety and protection of the rights of electrical and communications workers, as well as local government employees, health ca

re industry employees, and many more non-construction occupations. Local 1547 represents workers in many diverse construction classifications including power linemen, inside wiremen, power plant workers and technicians, mechanics, warehouse workers, line clearance tree trimmers and heavy equipment operators. Classifications in communications include telephone linemen, installation and repair workers, telephone operators, central office technicians, cable maintenance workers, and fiber optic specialists, just to name a few. We also take pride in knowing that our efforts in strengthening safety and worker rights benefit many other workers in our state, not just those we represent. Traditionally, people think of IBEW members as people who work with electricity—but over the years, other classifications have joined the ranks of Local 1547. Some of the many classifications we represent are: cooks, certified nursing assistants, clerks, accounting specialists, engineers, city and municipal employees, property management workers, maintenance custodians, gardeners, librarians, plant services workers, programmers, radar operators, cashiers and x-ray technicians. With close to 5000 members, IBEW Local 1547 is, we believe, one of the strongest unions in the state of Alaska.

IBEW LOCAL 1547 is ALL IN for GCI WORKERS!

IBEW Local 1547 works every day to help our members stand together against the constant push to take away workers’ wages, benefits, and workplace protections. Across Alaska, too many hardworking people face low wages, expensive healthcare, and a lack of rights in their workplace.

Our goal is to give everyday workers the opportunity to build a career with an employer who respects their workforce enough to offer a livable wage and a benefit plan that allows them to care for their families and retire with dignity.

That’s why we invite the workers of GCI to join us in this effort. We want every GCI employee to have the same opportunity that IBEW members enjoy at our sister properties across the state: fair wages, quality benefits, and a voice in the workplace.

IBEW LOCAL 1547 is ALL IN for GCI WORKERS!

ALL IN for FAIR WAGES
ALL IN for AFFORDABLE HEALTHCARE
ALL IN for RESPECT

If you work for GCI, we encourage you to stand with your coworkers and join us! Together, we can build a stronger future for GCI workers and their families.

Current members of Local 1547: Help us support our future members at GCI. Talk to the people you know, share our message, and invite them to contact the hall. Every conversation makes a difference.

WE ARE STRONGER TOGETHER!

HISTORY MADE ON PRINCE OF WALES ISLAND!

The Alaska Power & Telephone (AP&T) crew on Prince of Wales Island has voted to ratify their first collective bargaining agreement with IBEW Local 1547.

This is what solidarity looks like. These workers stood together, had each other’s backs, and used their collective voice to build a better future for themselves, their families, and their communities.

Congratulations to our newest IBEW Brothers at AP&T. Your solidarity got you organized, got you to the bargaining table, and got your first contract across the finish line.

Welcome to IBEW Local 1547!

Organized 2026. First contract ratified. The future is union. ⚡
