How Can You Help?
Monarch butterflies and other pollinators need our help to thrive. Luckily there are lots of things you can do!

🌲 Plant pine, fir, or cedar trees
Monarchs roost close together at night. These trees have thick canopies which moderate temperature at night to keep butterflies warm.

🌱 Plant milkweed
Monarchs only lay eggs on milkweed. This is because monarch caterpillars will only eat milkweed. Without milkweed, they will not develop into butterflies.

🌸 Plant native flowers
All native pollinators need nectar sources. Flowering plants provide energy and nutrients for pollinators. Using native flowers is most beneficial to native pollinators.

💦 No plants? No problem!
Pollinators also need water sources and basking areas. You can help by providing areas where water will pond for pollinators to drink. Butterflies also need to be warm to fly. Provide rocks which will heat in the sun for butterflies to warm themselves.

🦋 Monarch Migrating Generation 🦋
During summer breeding season, monarchs live 2 – 5 weeks during which they mate and lay eggs that become the next generation. The last generation of the year migrates to Mexico where they overwinter. These butterflies become reproductive in February and March as they move north, laying eggs as they progress north through the U.S.

Generation 1 monarchs are the offspring of the monarchs who overwintered in Mexico. Generation 1 monarchs are born in Texas. Each successive generation travels farther north. It will take 3 generations to reach the northern U.S. and Canada. Then the cycle starts all over again, with generation 4 monarchs, which live up to 9 months, traveling south to overwinter in Mexico.

🦋 Monarchs in Decline 🦋

A survey of monarch butterflies overwintering in central Mexico is conducted annually. The health of the monarch population is judged based on the estimated acres of forest occupied during the winter. There has been a steady decline in the total area occupied by overwintering monarchs since mid-1990 with periodic, unsustained rebounds.

Climate change, pesticide use, and habitat loss in Mexico and the United States threatens the monarch population.

At our garden, we are seeing firsthand how planting for pollinators is helping our local monarch population. In 2023, we saw our first monarch chrysalis at the site.

At Des Moines Asphalt and CRH, we strive to be good neighbors in the communities in which we operate. Being good neighbors doesn’t stop with our human neighbors. When we heard about the decline of native host and nectar plants for pollinators, we knew we had to help.

With over 30 plants in the ground, our pollinator garden is providing food to many pollinators passing through. In 2026, 7 different types of pollinators were spotted in our garden. Here’s to many more in 2027!

We are proud to announce our pollinator garden achieved Silver Certification with the Wildlife Habitat Council in 2024.
