If the house is getting cold and the furnace will not run, a few quick checks can save a service call. Make sure the thermostat is set to heat and above room temperature, and replace its batteries if the screen is blank. Check that the furnace power switch near the unit is on and the breaker has not tripped. Look at the filter, and make sure the furnace access panel is fully closed. Once the AC is done for the year, a common question is whether to cover the outdoor unit. Most outdoor units are built to sit through Iowa weather uncovered. A full tarp or tight wrap can trap moisture inside and give mice a sheltered spot for the winter. If falling leaves or dripping ice from the roofline are a concern, a breathable cover over the top only is plenty.
