Michigan Balloon Recovery & Satellite Testbed Michigan Ballooning!! Follow us at https://twitter.com/UMICH_MBuRST and track our flights at http:// MBuRST is sponsored by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

We are a student project team in the Student Space Systems Fabrication Lab (S3FL) at the University of Michigan. MBuRST has successfully launched and recovered 16 space balloons within the last year. This activity at the University of Michigan has allowed students to get a practical, hands-on experience in designing, building, testing and launching systems. While they are not nearly as complex as

real satellite systems, they give the student an extremely good idea of how complex systems interact and the problems with integration and operation of real systems in a near space environment. This is invaluable experience that shortens the technology readiness level during the transition from the university to corporate world.

This weekend, The University of Michigan Aerospace Engineering Department hosted Aerospace Day, an outreach event where K12 students come participate in fun aerospace engineering experiences while their parents have an opportunity to talk with current students about their experiences at Michigan. The panorama shows the aftermath of the buouancy experiement we hosted.

At the MBuRST station, students got helium-filled balloons. Their goal was to make them rise from floor to ceiling in exactly ten seconds by adding a payload made of paper/marbles/plastic figurines. This is way harder than it sounded, and the students were incredibly excited and competative. Parents and students provided us with great feedback and comments, our personal favorites include 'Don't you work here?' to 'You're gonna hafta help me get this rocket juuuust right' and some impeccable explanations of lift and drag.

While some of our members were at Aerospace day, the rest of the team was helping Engineering 100 and 584 classes launch their payloads across Michigan. Some cool photos and pictures from that hopefully to come!

Hey everyone! If you're interested in Aerospace Engineering, really liked the weather balloon project in Eng 100 or simply want to build things that go in space, check out MBuRST.

The Michigan Balloon Recovery and Satellite Testbed (MBuRST) is a design team at the University of Michigan focused on flying scientific and satellite payloads on high-altitude weather balloons. These balloons reach altitudes upwards of 100,000 ft and temperatures as low as -60 degrees Celsius. This near-space environment allows MBuRST to be a great testing platform for student-built space systems.

Our meetings are held every Thursday from 8-9 pm in the Space Research Building. If you're interested, come join us at the next meeting on Thursday 1/25 and fill out this google form:
