In this picture there is a metallic silver colored tee that connects to the 3 copper pipes. That part is called a thermostatic mixing valve. Typically you would set your water heater temperature to approximately 120 degrees F. When you have a mixing valve- You can set the water heater temperature all the way up to 160-170 degrees. The idea is that the 170ish degree water goes into the mixing valve where it mixes with cold water bringing it back down to a normal temperature around 120. It's safe to say that a mixing valve will give you at least an extra 30-35% more hot water. If you ever regularly run out of hot water because your water heater doesn't keep up with the demand from the family or house mates- You need this in your life.
