🚢🌊 Cosmo is getting shipshape in Key West! There's been plenty of hands-on progress aboard R/V Cosmo as we get her prepared for the next leg of her journey.

From getting the compressor up and running to hull cleaning and work on the watermaker, radar, autopilot, hydraulics, and stabilizers, the team has been busy!

Next up: systems testing before departure. Then it's time to point south toward Panama! 🇵🇦

A big thank-you to the team at Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary for their hospitality and support along the way!

Lots of hard work behind the scenes, and exciting things on the horizon! 🙌

🌊 BIG NEWS from GMSO! 🎉 We're thrilled to announce that Greenwater Marine Sciences Offshore (GMSO) has been awarded its first federal government contract as a prime contractor, supporting NOAA Fisheries!

And we're headed into some extraordinary science. 🔬

From collecting deep-sea specimens and exploring seamounts to supporting ROV operations at depths of up to 6,000 meters (nearly 20,000 feet!), this work will help scientists explore and better understand some of the ocean's least-known environments.

It's an exciting step forward for GMSO and an opportunity to provide the vessels, expertise, and capabilities that make deep-ocean research possible.

We're proud of this milestone and can't wait to share more as the work gets underway! 🌊

🌊 The last great exploration on planet Earth? Mapping the seafloor.

GMSO Founder and CEO Commander G. Mark Miller (NOAA, Ret.) recently joined the global research vessel community at the 37th International Research Ship Operators (IRSO) Meeting in Cardiff, Wales!

Mark presented “The Last, Great Exploration on Planet Earth: Mapping the Seafloor,” sharing GMSO's vision for a new approach to one of our planet's biggest remaining exploration challenges.

At the heart of that vision is Ocean Mapper, a supervised-autonomous, minimally crewed research vessel being developed with explorer Victor Vescovo and Caladan Oceanic to help accelerate global seafloor mapping and contribute to the Nippon Foundation–GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project.

As Mark put it, the goal is to make mapping the deep ocean “a near-term operation instead of a generational aspiration.”

And beyond the big ideas, there was time to reconnect with fellow NOAA Corps classmate Scott Sirois and explore historic Cardiff Castle! 🌎

An evening with an ocean exploration legend. 🌊

GMSO’s Mike Carter recently visited the new National Geographic Museum of Exploration in Washington, D.C. for the “Drinks with an Explorer” event. Featuring oceanographer and National Geographic Explorer at Large Dr. Robert Ballard, the event celebrated the anniversary of Ballard’s groundbreaking discovery of the RMS Titanic.

From stories of exploration and discovery to insights drawn from a career spanning more than 150 expeditions, it was an exciting evening — and a chance to connect with others who share GMSO’s passion for exploring and better understanding our ocean.

Thanks to National Geographic for bringing the exploration community together!

A 75% chance of an El Niño stronger than any previously recorded since 1950.

That’s a remarkable forecast from NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center — and one with potentially significant implications for ocean and climate systems around the world.

The ocean is always telling us something. The challenge is making sure we’re there to listen.

This striking NASA visualization shows sea surface height anomalies across the Pacific as El Niño conditions develop. Warmer water expands, increasing sea surface height — creating a signal that satellites can track across an enormous and dynamic ocean.

But understanding what those changes mean requires more than observing them from above.

El Niño can reshape ocean temperatures, circulation, weather patterns, and marine ecosystems across vast regions. Continued research — from satellites to sustained observations at sea — helps scientists understand how these systems are changing, how they interact, and what those changes may mean locally and globally.

It’s also a powerful reminder of why access to the ocean matters so much, especially right now. Research vessels and marine infrastructure put scientists, instruments, and technology where they need to be to collect critical in-water observations, validate data, and better understand a changing ocean.

A big thank you to the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and Chad Stolka for giving R/V Cosmo a home at the dock and lending a hand while she’s been in Key West. ⚓️🌊

Having a place for Cosmo to stay while Captain Lad and the team work through preparations for her upcoming journey to Panama has been a tremendous help, and we’re grateful for the hospitality and friendship along the way.

It’s partnerships like these that help keep vessels moving, missions progressing, and good work on the water possible. We’re grateful to have such great friends in Key West!
