We’re proud to celebrate an outstanding showing for the Northeastern Section at ACS Fall 2026 in Chicago: five ChemLuminary Award finalist nominations and two national awards.

🧪 Outstanding National Chemistry Week Event for a Specific Audience

Recognizing the exceptional National Chemistry Week programming led by Jennifer Maclachlan and its impact in engaging a specific audience through chemistry outreach.

✨ Outstanding Local Section Younger Chemists Committee

Recognizing the work of the Younger Chemists Committee (NSYCC) and its commitment to building community, professional development, and opportunities for younger chemists across the region.

Special recognition to recent NSYCC Chairs Letícia Adão Gomes and Marcela de Barros, whose leadership has helped strengthen and grow the committee.

The New England Association of Chemistry Teachers and NESACS (Northeastern Section of the American Chemical Society) are excited to announce the formation of two new projects. 'Connect with a Chemist' and 'Future Chemists on the Go' aim to bridge the divide between high school chemistry students and industry/academia, giving students two pathways to see how chemistry can be pursued as their career.

'Connect with a Chemist' brings chemists from industry or academia into high school chemistry classrooms, sharing their journey and expertise while engaging with students and teachers in hands-on activities. Teachers and chemists alike are encouraged to collaborate beforehand on what activity will work best for the chemist's background and the teacher's demographic.

'Future Chemists on the Go' offers up to $1,500 in bus funding to STEM institutions/universities. More and more, rising bus costs are the barrier to teachers getting out of the classroom and showcasing the world of chemistry around them. This program strives to eliminate that hurdle, enabling high school students and future chemists to experience firsthand what their career may hold.

We have an expanding database of chemists and organizations that have signed up to be a part of these programs. Please scan the QR code in the attached image to sign up as a chemist/institution of interest or express interest as a high school teacher.

On July 23, the Sustainable Innovations in Materials Science and Engineering (SIMSE) Symposium brought scientists, students, and industry leaders together at Simmons University to explore a more circular and sustainable future.

Presentations examined rare-earth recovery, PFAS capture and degradation, the commercialization of scientific discoveries, and the value of cross-disciplinary systems thinking. One message connected them all: our most meaningful solutions emerge when chemistry, biology, materials science, engineering, and industry work together.

The 14th Annual Advances in Chemical Sciences Symposium, hosted by NESACS MedChem at Alkermes in Waltham, MA, brought together more than 250 attendees from across academia, biotech, pharma, government research, and the broader life sciences community.

A key highlight was the keynote lecture by Dr. Martin Chalfie of Columbia University, recipient of the 2008 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Dr. Chalfie discussed the discovery and development of Green Fluorescent Protein as a biological marker, sharing how curiosity-driven science can lead to discoveries that transform biomedical research, diagnostics, and therapeutics.
