The 14th Annual Advances in Chemical Sciences Symposium, hosted by NESACS MedChem at Alkermes in Waltham, MA, brought together more than 250 attendees from across academia, biotech, pharma, government research, and the broader life sciences community.

A key highlight was the keynote lecture by Dr. Martin Chalfie of Columbia University, recipient of the 2008 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Dr. Chalfie discussed the discovery and development of Green Fluorescent Protein as a biological marker, sharing how curiosity-driven science can lead to discoveries that transform biomedical research, diagnostics, and therapeutics.

Thank you to our speakers, sponsors, exhibitors, volunteers, attendees, and Alkermes for making this year’s symposium a success.

NESACS was honored to celebrate Professor Héctor D. Abruña, recipient of the 2026 Gustavus John Esselen Award for Chemistry in the Public Interest, on April 17.

The evening recognized Prof. Abruña’s contributions to electrochemistry, energy storage, clean hydrogen, and resilient energy systems. His lecture, “The Energy Landscape in the Age of Sustainability,” connected fundamental chemistry with emerging technologies that can serve communities and help address urgent energy challenges.

NESACS extends its sincere thanks to Prof. Abruña, Mrs. Celia Salles, the Esselen family, the Esselen Award Committee, NESACS leadership, colleagues, students, and all who joined us for this celebration of chemistry in service to the public good.

Read more in the Summer Edition of The Nucleus, releasing July 1.
