Here's a quick look at the many ways engine's burn oil. Keeping the proper amount of oil in your vehicle will keep it running optimally maximizing fuel efficiency.

Engine oil burning occurs when oil enters the combustion chamber and burns together with the air-fuel mixture. This problem is common in high-mileage or poorly maintained engines and can lead to serious internal damage if ignored.

One major cause is worn piston rings. These rings are designed to seal combustion pressure and control oil on the cylinder wall. When worn or stuck, oil leaks past the rings and burns during combustion. Valve stem seal failure is another common issue. Damaged valve seals allow oil to leak through the valve guides into the intake or exhaust ports, especially during startup or deceleration.

Cylinder wall wear or scoring can also reduce sealing efficiency, allowing oil to enter the chamber. In turbocharged engines, worn turbo seals may leak oil into the intake system, causing smoke and excessive oil consumption. Additionally, a faulty PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) system can create excessive crankcase pressure and force oil into the intake manifold.

Typical symptoms include blue smoke from the exhaust, low oil levels, fouled spark plugs, and reduced engine performance. Burning oil also creates carbon buildup, damages catalytic converters, and lowers engine efficiency.

Early diagnosis and proper maintenance are essential to prevent severe engine wear, high repair costs, and eventual engine failure.

Don’t forget to change your coolant for the summer season!

Don’t forget to change your coolant for the summer season!

Coolant does much more than prevent overheating. It also protects the engine from corrosion, lubricates the water pump, and helps maintain stable operating temperatures. When coolant is never replaced, its protective additives gradually break down, allowing serious internal damage to develop over time.

Old coolant becomes contaminated with rust, mineral deposits, and sludge. These contaminants can clog radiator passages, heater cores, and engine cooling channels, reducing coolant flow and heat transfer efficiency. As a result, the engine begins to run hotter than normal, increasing the risk of overheating.

Neglected coolant also accelerates corrosion inside the engine and cooling system components. Water pumps, seals, hoses, and aluminum parts can wear prematurely due to acidic or dirty coolant. Over time, this may lead to coolant leaks, pump failure, warped cylinder heads, or even blown head gaskets.

One of the biggest dangers is that coolant deterioration often happens silently. The vehicle may appear normal until major engine damage suddenly occurs. Regular coolant replacement helps maintain proper cooling performance, prevents rust and scale buildup, and extends engine life.

Most manufacturers recommend changing coolant every 40,000–60,000 km or every 2–3 years, depending on the vehicle and coolant type. Clean coolant is a simple maintenance step that can prevent very expensive repairs later.
