I walked into the hardware store this week and got greeted by a 12-foot skeleton, a lineup of animatronics, and a whole aisle of tombstones and inflatables. Halloween is officially here.
It got me thinking. The decorations that make a home feel joyful all need somewhere to go: power, storage, and a plan. When you’re designing a new home, that’s the best time to plan for them.
A few things we talk through with our clients during design:
🎃 Switched exterior outlets. We put them on porches, along walkways and in landscape beds, so one switch inside turns everything on.
🎄 Soffit and eave outlets. Roofline lights go up without extension cords running through windows.
🔌 Dedicated outdoor circuits. Inflatables and animatronics add up, and a tripped breaker on Christmas Eve is no fun.
📶 Wi-Fi that reaches the yard. Smart plugs and timers need a signal to work.
📦 Real storage. Garage shelving, attic access with a pull-down stair, or a bonus room closet sized for the bins that come out every season.
🪝 Built-in anchor points. We add blocking behind siding, porch posts and mantels for wreaths, garland and banners.
🌳 Conduit to the yard. Pull power to the big oak or the front lawn display later without trenching your new landscaping.
Whether you go all-out or keep it to a wreath and a few pumpkins on the steps, the right planning makes every season easier to celebrate.
