After 1500 hours of flight time (30 oil/filter changes), this is the sludge accumulation in the crankshaft/propeller oil galley of a Continental IO-550. Considering this engine has burned nearly 25,000 gallons of leaded aviation fuel, this is not unusual. (10mm socket for reference.) 😁

There’s lots of plotting that takes place on a trans-Atlantic flight. Navigation waypoints, 10 minute checks, and equal time points (ETPs) for depressurization, engine issues, and medical emergencies. The iPad is soooo much better than having to do all this on a paper plotting chart.

Most pilots are familiar with the FAA Wings program which promotes continuation training. AMTs have a similar program specifically addressing maintenance subjects. Log onto www.faasafety.gov to learn more about the Wings program for pilots and mechanics. The learning never ends in aviation!
