Since storm season is nearly upon us, we here at Hollow Oak Restorations wanted to give you a few tips just in case something unexpected happens to your home.

1. Make sure to take a lot of pictures:

This is really important at the start, especially if your roof or car is damaged from falling limbs. Not all insurances are the same and if they cannot see the damage came from a tree or came from wind, they may not accept the claim.

2. Contact a licensed professional in the area of damage to inspect the object(s) in question:

This can be a plumber for if a pipe bursts or an electrician if your meter is broken. Typically an insurance will list the basic components for something like, if your roof has a hole punctured in it. They would cover the price of replacement for your shingles, but only someone who works on roofing can say if the underlayment or even the joists are broken, which could be a huge difference in how much a job looks like it costs vs how much it actually does. Additionally, licensed and insured contractors are more likely to be approved by insurance than uninsured workers.

3. Make sure you have a claim before you do ANY work on your home:

This is the most painful one to do, as you want to just fix that hole torn. But some insurances may not cover the cost of damages if you patch the roof or your wall on your own. We would recommend you make sure you're covered before you do any work, whether it's by yourself or hired help. You can put tarps over your home or do emergency stuff without this, though you DO need pictures before you do anything.

With the coronavirus and storm season about to meet, it's best you stay safe with making sure to get the best out of your policy!

Like many small business owners, we at Hollow Oak Restorations are faced with the imminent possibility of a service shutdown. It is a concerning and uncertain time to be a small business owner. Yesterday, our management team met to discuss how we should handle a possible work stoppage, and in the end we came to the same conclusion that I am confident many other SBO's have made in recent weeks: trust God to be in control.

Beginning Monday, March 23, all of our jobs will be prioritized by urgency, with consideration given to our elderly or infirm clients. It is our mission to move through this crisis by doing the best work we can do for the longest time we can do it. For those clients who may be left waiting, Hollow Oak Restorations has a contingency in place to financially assist our employees should the need arise, so that when we finally reach the other side of this crisis, our quality of work will not suffer.

Thank you to all of our Facebook followers for your support (and referrals). We, like you, will continue to pray, and trust God to deliver us in this national time of need.

No matter how safe your home may seem, there's always a risk for termite damage. But don't worry, we know how to repair most any damage and make it look brand new! (And we swear the smudge on the after pics is from the camera, not our paint job!)

Here's a tip: With hurricane season upon us, it's never a bad idea to review your homeowner's policy.

Insurance companies provide different levels of coverage for homeowners, and that's a good thing, because it means you can customize to you individual needs. But before you sign on the dotted line, make sure you understand your coverage and your exemptions.

For instance, a Roof Exclusion Endorsement is a discount that can save you hundreds of dollars per year in premium expenses, but it also means that your roof is not covered in the event of wind or storm damage. That sort of discount can be costly to homeowners after a major storm event. Paying for a new roof out of pocket would be financially devastating to most families.

Before you agree to any policy discounts, you should talk to your insurance agent. Not all discounts are bad, and no one wants to give money away, but the discounts may significantly change your coverage. Read over your policy carefully, and have your agent explain it to you. Understanding your coverage before you need it will save you a lot of time and trouble after a disaster.

Some of our guys were looking the other day at a place with roof damage that requires some framing work done. The newest addition to the company that was out there with us was asking whats the difference between trusses on this job versus joists on the job we had just visited. Of course, if he didn't realize it, how would someone who doesn't do this for a living? Hunker had a great little article explaining just the difference between the two that we thought was a nice short read.

In architecture and engineering, joists and trusts are two methods that support weight and provide structural integrity. While much different in design and function, joists and...

We're working on a lot of roofs lately due to people still needing repairs from the hurricane last year and making the switch from shingles to metal has been pretty popular. This can be pretty intimidating, especially when they have to decide which type of roof is right for them. Hollow Oak Restorations has years of experience with both Standing Seam and Exposed Fastener, so contact us if you want us to help you make the switch!

You might be thinking: “How different can standing seam metal roofing and exposed fastener metal roofing really be?” The answer is: Very different. While each system utilizes some of the same materials and ultimately performs the same function of covering and protecting a structure, standing sea...
