Every truck on the road says "licensed" on the door. Doesn't mean the same thing everywhere. In Tennessee, I'm a licensed electrician — LLE # 6*2** — which means the state has actually tested and vetted me for electrical work, not just handed out a decal for the truck.

Ask to see the number before you hire somebody. A real one holds up when you look it up. Skipping that step can cost you more than the estimate — a failed inspection means redoing work you already paid for, sometimes tearing back into a wall that was supposed to be done.

Every panel I open teaches me something about what to actually worry about. Two breakers jammed onto a slot that was only built for one. A brand on the label — Federal Pacific, Zinsco — nobody in this trade has trusted in decades. Wire sized for a house that never had half of what you've got plugged into it now.

Heard this too many times: "I'll just skip the permit, save some money." A permit's not the city taking a cut. It's a second set of eyes making sure what's behind your wall won't burn your house down while you're asleep.

Skip it and get caught, you're not just fixing the electrical — you're tearing out drywall you already paid for so it can finally get inspected right. And when you go to sell, unpermitted work can hold up closing or knock money off your price.
