DID YOU KNOW? Solar is the fastest energy source to deploy
When disaster strikes, no electricity source can be built or repaired as quickly as solar -- as the situation in Puerto Rico following this year's hurricanes demonstrated. Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) and others were able to build small solar power plants with energy storage capabilities on the island in a matter of weeks. No fossil-fuel power plant, nor any other renewable energy facility, could have been brought only so quickly.

China is the world leader in solar energy ... by a lot

Solar energy is starting to get a lot of attention in the U.S., but we're small fish compared to China. In 2017, GTM Research estimates that the U.S. will install 12.4 GW of new solar power systems. China installed 24.4 GW in the first half alone, and will likely pass 50 GW for the full year.
To put China's 2017 solar installations into perspective, that 50 GW of solar would power 8.2 million U.S. homes.

Let’s look at the cost of electricity vs the cost of installing solar:
Solar panel costs have fallen 99% since 1977
In 1977, it cost $77 per watt for a simple solar cell. According to Solar Energy Industries Association and GTM Research's Q3 2017 Solar Market Insight Report, the cost of a solar cell now is $0.21 per watt. An entire assembled module is $0.39 per watt.

Sure you knew going solar could save you money. But, did you know it could also potentially make you money?

Some states, the Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) requires electricity suppliers to secure a portion of their electricity from solar generators. Rather than investing in systems of their own, in applicable states this has resulted in what is called an SREC market. Solar Renewable Energy Certificates (SREC) are created for every megawatt-hour of solar electricity created. So if your system is consistently generating more energy than you are consuming, you have the opportunity to sell that energy back at a premium.

Contrary to popular belief, it doesn’t have to be a sunny day for you to benefit from solar energy.

Solar energy is generated from daylight, not sunlight. So even on cloudy, rainy days, your panels will be working to produce energy. All that energy accumulates in the morning and afternoon hours, the whole time that the sun is up, producing more electricity than you can use.
Currently, all solar energy providers keep you connected to the grid. So any excess energy is pushed back onto the grid, actually causing your utility meter to spin backward, crediting your account. Then, in the evening hours, you will be using the credited energy from the meter. This excess energy does not expire and is similar to rollover minutes with your telephone company.

I’m sure you knew you would save money on your electric bill by going solar. But, did you know going solar can also improve your home value and possibly make your home more marketable?

A study by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California showed that across the board, buyers were willing to pay $15,000 extra for a home with an average-sized solar panel system. Not only is this likely to amount to more than your original investment, it’s a return on investment that is in addition to the money you have saved on energy all the while that you owned the house.
In a challenging market, solar panels can even be the difference in selling your house or not, an added bonus that gives potential buyers a reason to consider your house over others as their next long term home.
Additionally, in most states solar panels will not increase your property taxes. 38 states currently have property tax exemptions that exclude the added value of a solar panel system from being considered in the valuation of a property for taxation purposes.

We have all heard going solar is good for the environment. But, do you know what makes it good for the environment exactly? Here are a few environmental issues solar can help with.

In the U.S., fossil fuels are used to generate 68% of the electricity we consume, and the resulting emissions from the combustion of those fuels aren’t good, including:

- Carbon dioxide (CO2) – a greenhouse gas which contributes to global warming

- Carbon monoxide (CO) –

- Sulfur dioxide (SO2) – causes acid rain, which is harmful to plants and to animals that live in water, also exacerbating respiratory illnesses and heart diseases

- Nitrogen oxides (NOx) – contributes to ground-level ozone, which irritates and damages lungs

- Particulate matter (PM) – causes hazy conditions in cities and scenic areas. Coupled with ozone it contributes to asthma and chronic bronchitis

- Mercury and other heavy metals – hazardous to human and animal health

Did you see this article about residential solar installations increasing in Illinois?

By Steve Tarter
of the Journal Star

While sun-drenched states such as California and Arizona have made big strides in generating solar power in recent years, solar energy can do fine in Illinois, said Steve Flinn, an instructor at Illinois Central College. “Germany is a country that might get less sunshine than Illinois but has consumed 50 percent of the world’s solar panels,” he said.

While sunlight is important in the production of solar energy, there’s no solar advantage gained when temperatures rise, said Flinn. “Hot weather actually reduces the efficiency of solar panels,” he said.

The decision to put a solar system on the roof of an old warehouse building at 201 Spring St. in Downtown Peoria was an easy one, said Steve Foster, Ruyle’s president. “From the beginning, we wanted to incorporate the latest building practices to assure the building would be energy efficient and a functioning laboratory where we will demonstrate these technologies,” he said.

“We see solar as a growing side of our business,” said Foster, referring to Ruyle, a mechanical services contractor with 55 employees. “You’re going to see more of solar in the future as the efficiency of the panels increases. The beauty of solar is that it’s virtually maintenance-free with no moving parts,” he said.
