The need to acclimate the various components of flooring systems, including floorcoverings, adhesives, accessories, coatings and other materials, cannot be understated. And it’s not just the materials but also the building itself that require to be conditioned. Many flooring failures occur due to not understanding the acclimation process and not following manufacturer guidelines and industry standards related to acclimation.

Improper acclimation can lead to floors bowing, cracking, gapping, peaking, interlocking mechanisms breaking, and other unacceptable conditions that result in a flooring failure and voiding of flooring system warranties.

Safety Leadership & Communication class in the Construction Academy presented by the Associated Builders and Contractors of Georgia provides behind-the-scene necessities of building a safety culture that is essential for the worker and the company.

Balfour Beatty US Southeast Director of Safety, Ryan Little, CSP, provided insights from over 22 years in safety.

The “Construction 101” series is designed for GCs, subs, suppliers and other industry professionals who are fairly new to construction or who would benefit from a better understanding of the construction process from start to finish.

The 21 hours of educational content in seven classes, help fill the gap between what is taught in college and what normally is only acquired on the job.

Created and led by professionals from ABC of Georgia member companies, this program gets participants up to speed more quickly and help them avoid common pitfalls and costly mistakes.

Classes include:
• Project Documentation
• Preconstruction
• Procurement
• Mobilization and Document Control
• Scheduling
• Safety Leadership and Communication
• Quality

Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) uses for scanning concrete structures, a professional continuing education program.

Concrete repair industry members come together for an informative lunch-and-learn presentation, and networking.

The presentation focused on the use of ground penetrating radar (GPR) for concrete inspection applied to repair and refurbishment.

An overview was included of the basic concepts of the physics and material science behind GPR, including what influences scanning depth, resolution, and limits.

Three case studies were detailed from structures including, the spillway of a hydroelectric dam, a floor/foundation of a refinery, and grade beams supporting a boat crane.

These case studies highlighted different ways that GPR can assist during repair programs that might include needed demolition and resurfacing of affected concrete, filling in voids developed below slabs, or detect locations for visual inspection to determine the level of necessary repairs.

Presenter, Dr. Daniel Bigman, is the president of Bigman Geophysical and the founder of LearnGPR.

Bigman received a Bachelors Degree from the City University of New Yok-Herbert H. Lehman College, and a Ph.D. from The University of Georgia in 2012. From 2012 to 2015, Bigman was an instructor and Lecturer for both UGA and Georgia State University before starting his current company.

FLOORING INSTALLATION QUALITY ASSURANCE PROGRAMS should include removing cores in concrete slabs-on-ground to determine key factors, if otherwise are unknown:

• Existence of an effective v***r retarder directly under the slab;
• Concrete slab thickness for F2170 RH testing, and if needed, determination of layers of underlayments or toppings and their thickness.

Some other determinations that core removal can be use for include:

• Moisture testing of soils directly below the slab;
• Confirm voids detected by GPR scanning;
• Lab analysis of the core for possible contaminants, ASR, or other analysis.

The photograph in this post shows the terrazzo floor surface marked where ground penetrating radar (GPR) scanning was used to locate embeddings in the concrete slab prior to coring, and drilling for ASTM F2170 RH moisture testing.

The black plastic that was removed from under the core is construction plastic that does not meet the requirements of the industry "Standard Specification for Plastic Water V***r Retarders Used in Contact with Soil or Granular Fill under Concrete Slabs."

SCAN BEFORE YOU DRILL OR CORE

When conducting internal relative humidity (RH) moisture testing using in situ probes (ASTM F2170), or otherwise drilling or coring in concrete slabs, it is critical to conduct an internal scan of the slab.

Concrete slabs, suspended or on-ground, can have a variety of embedding, including post tensioning (PT) cables, electrical conduit, and other items.

Many floor testing agencies do not scan because they do not have the necessary equipment to properly perform the task. Do not allow underequipped firms drill into your concrete slab and risk damage to PT cables, MEP, and other concrete embeddings.

FloorSciences™ (https://bellsciences.com) utilizes high-tech ground penetrating radar (GPR) for this purpose to properly locate and avoid slab embedding.

Gym / Fitness Center Flooring Failure.

Excessive concrete slab moisture can cause catastrophic floor failures that can make a facility unusable due to trip hazards, mold and other microbial growth, and unacceptable aesthetics.

In addition to testing for concrete slab moisture, slabs on grade should be inspected for an effective under-slab v***r retarder that meets relevant ACI and ASTM standards. If needed, cores should be drilled/removed for this purpose. Cores can also be lab analyzed for potential contamination or alkali silica reaction (ASR) issues that can affect flooring systems.

Before coring, concrete slabs should be scanned with ground penetrating radar (GPR) to locate and avoid any embeddings in, or directly under, the slab.

Bell Building Sciences can evaluate commercial flooring failures though a variety of analytical protocols. ASTM compliant concrete moisture testing can be performed. In-house GPR scanning allows us to perform in situ concrete RH moisture testing, and drill cores.

We perform a comprehensive range of analytical services to evaluate flooring failures. Many of these same services are also utilized to provide QA/QC on new construction, renovations, and flooring replacements of subfloor prep, moisture mitigation systems, and finished floor coverings and coatings.
