Congrats to John Blazeck, associate professor in Georgia Tech's School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, who has won a 2026 Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award from the National Science Foundation (NSF).

The CAREER Award is the NSF’s most prestigious award in support of junior faculty who exemplify the role of teacher-scholars.

Blazeck will receive $647,941 over five years for “Creating and evolving antibodies from scratch in yeast.”

Congrats to Kayla Carneal (ChBE B.S. 2026), one of five students selected as Reflection Speakers for Georgia Tech Commencement, who is heading back to NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, after graduation.

She’s joining the Environmental Controls and Life Support Systems team, which focuses on technologies that help keep astronauts alive during missions and aboard the International Space Station.

NASA is familiar territory for Kayla. During her undergraduate studies, she completed multiple NASA co-op rotations involving projects related to Artemis missions, oxygen generation systems, nuclear thermal propulsion, lunar regolith research, and more.

She also interned with Tesla, conducted undergraduate research, and held leadership roles in Engineers Without Borders and Peer Mentoring.

Her advice to future students: “Be open-minded! My path and career goals changed drastically during my time here.”

Congrats to new Ph.D. graduate Henry Kantrow, who is heading to a postdoc position at Caltech.

At Georgia Tech, Henry appreciated the exposure to highly collaborative, multidisciplinary research, which helped him grow not only as a chemical engineer, but also as a materials scientist, physical chemist, and polymer physicist.

“Ultimately, I hope to continue in academia and become a professor of chemical engineering, materials science, and/or chemistry.” he said.

His Ph.D. work centered on the photophysics of conducting polymers. At Caltech, he'll move into new territory, developing benchtop transient soft X-ray and extreme ultraviolet spectroscopy techniques.

“Without a doubt, these next steps in my career would not be possible without the opportunities afforded to me during my Ph.D. studies at Georgia Tech,” he said.

Congratulations to Jeong Soo (Jennifer) Lee, a Ph.D. graduate of ChBE@GT, who is joining Regeneron Pharmaceuticals in Tarrytown, New York, as a Senior Scientist in Product Biochemistry R&D.

Working in the lab of Prof. Ravi Kane, Jennifer’s doctoral research focused on developing protein-based vaccines and therapeutics against viral infections and other diseases, including vaccine platforms designed to create broad immune responses against coronaviruses. Her work also involved identifying and evaluating promising antibody-like therapies against rapidly evolving viral variants

"I came in wanting to learn how to learn—to figure out how to become an expert in a new area from the ground up," she said. "Through my research, I not only developed expertise in nanoparticle vaccines and antibody therapeutics but also gained confidence in my ability to pick up and adapt to new fields as needed." https://bit.ly/49CH5Vv

Congratulations to Georgia Tech ChBE graduate Emie Fleck on beginning her career as an Operations Engineer with Mary Kay Global near Dallas, Texas.

Emie discovered her passion for chemical engineering through Georgia Tech’s Women in Engineering program, where she realized she could combine her interests in cosmetics and skincare with her strengths in math and science.

After interning with Mary Kay last summer, she is returning full-time to help optimize manufacturing processes and improve efficiency at the company’s R&D and production facility. During her internship, she led a project that achieved a 79% reduction in dosing time and an 89% reduction in associated costs.

At Georgia Tech, Emie also served as a ChBE Peer Mentor, helping support incoming students, while taking on leadership roles in Greek life and AIChE. She credits Georgia Tech with strengthening her problem-solving skills and helping prepare her for the next step in her career.

Congratulations to ChBE graduate Leonardo Santamarina on his new role as Associate Scientist in Research & Development at Procter & Gamble. Hewill be based in Cincinnati, where he'll focus on product innovation for North America.

During his undergraduate years, Leo made the most of his time at Tech: research in Professor Ryan Lively's lab exploring direct air capture, internships at P&G that gave him deep hands-on R&D experience, leadership roles in the ChBE Student Advisory Board and Peer Mentor Program, and four years on the Club Soccer team.

He said he's leaving ChBE with a strong technical foundation and an even stronger sense of how to think like an engineer.

Congrats to Anush Venkataraman, a ChBE PhD graduate heading to Dow's Process and Catalysis R&D division in Lake Jackson, Texas, where he'll focus on advancing plastic circularity at scale.

At Georgia Tech, his doctoral research focused on producing essential chemicals like ethylene and synthesis gas from CO₂ captured directly from air, through pathways that could reduce carbon emissions by more than 95% compared to conventional methods.
