My little boy started calling our new neighbor **"the sorry man."** I thought it was just another funny thing kids say… until I caught the neighbor standing behind the fence one evening, and what I saw made my heart stop.
The months before my divorce were some of the darkest I'd ever lived through.
There were endless arguments, stacks of legal paperwork, court appearances, and sleepless nights wondering what our future would look like.
By the time everything was over, I felt completely drained.
Moving into a small house on a quiet street felt like the chance we both needed to begin again.
Even so, the transition wasn't easy.
My five-year-old son, Nick, missed the neighborhood we had left behind, and I was doing everything I could to rebuild our lives one small step at a time.
Not long after we moved in, the man next door introduced himself.
His name was Joseph.
From the very beginning, he was incredibly thoughtful.
He helped carry our moving boxes inside on the first day.
A few days later, he loaned me his tools after I realized mine were still packed away.
When our backyard gate came loose, he repaired it before I even had time to call someone.
He never expected payment or favors.
He would simply smile and tell me he was glad to help.
Then one afternoon, my son gave him a nickname I couldn't understand.
"The sorry man."
I chuckled the first time I heard it.
"Why do you call him that?"
Nick answered with a casual shrug.
"Because he says sorry all the time."
I figured it was just another one of those strange observations children make.
But he kept using it.
"The sorry man waved at me today."
"The sorry man fixed our fence."
Then one day he quietly added,
"The sorry man looks sad."
That made me pause.
"What do you mean he looks sad?"
My son shrugged again.
"He only looks that way when he thinks nobody's looking."
Those words stayed with me.
A few evenings later, I was pulling weeds along the backyard fence while Nick played inside the house.
That's when I heard Joseph's voice coming from the other side.
At first, I barely noticed.
Then I heard him whisper,
"I'm sorry."
I stopped what I was doing.
A moment later, he repeated it.
"I'm so... so sorry."
His voice sounded shattered.
Like someone trapped beneath the weight of a secret they could never leave behind.
Without thinking, I quietly stepped closer to the fence.
I looked through a narrow gap between the boards.
And the moment I realized what he was doing, every drop of blood seemed to leave my body. ⬇️
