Amazon Invests $1.4 Billion for Affordable Housing!
Amazon is adding $1.4 billion to a fund it established three years ago for preserving or building more affordable housing in regions where the company has major corporate offices, CEO Andy Jassy announced Tuesday.

The Seattle-based company said the new sum would go on top of the $2.2 billion it had already invested to help create or preserve 21,000 affordable housing units in three areas: the Puget Sound in Washington state; Arlington, Virginia; and Nashville, Tennessee. When it launched its Housing Equity Fund in January 2021, Amazon said it aimed to fund 20,000 units over five years.

The additional money will go to the same regions with a goal of building or maintaining 14,000 more homes through grants and below-market-rate loans. To date, most of the funding went to non-profit and for-profit developers in the form of loans that allow Amazon to earn revenue through interest payments. Amazon said 80% of the units also benefited from government funding.

GRAVITY UNVEILS DEAP TREES TO CHARGE ANY ELECTRIC VEHICLE

Gravity, an infrastructure startup for electric vehicles, has released DEAP Trees, a series of chargers with mounting and cable systems planted on the streets and curbsides so EV owners can fully charge their vehicles in 5 to 13 minutes while they’re on the road. They developed these for their 200kW and 500kW Distributed Energy Access Points, or DEAPs, which they have already unveiled to the public in March 2024.

Now, the startup takes their chargers further by implementing their curbside installations. Gravity is attempting to grow a network of on-street DEAP Trees charging, more expansive than Tesla’s current Supercharger network, as the startup aims to become ‘the largest fast-charging network in the US.’

White House unveils high-speed rail project for Atlanta airport.

The White House announced Friday that President Biden is investing into research for a new high-speed rail corridor that will link Hartsfield-Jackson Airport to the rest of the Southeast.

Why it matters: This infrastructure project could create thousands of jobs in metro Atlanta in order to build the rail corridor to the airport.

Driving the news: The White House announced $8.2 billion in new funding for 10 major passenger rail projects across the country, including the "first world-class high-speed rail projects in our country's history."

The funding comes from the $66 billion federal bipartisan infrastructure law.
Details: The government's Federal Railroad Administration's Corridor ID Program includes advancements to seven new high-speed rail projects.

One of those projects is the "Charlotte to Atlanta, a new high-speed rail corridor linking the Southeast and providing connection to Hartsfield-Jackson Airport, the busiest airport in the world," according to the White House.

Zoom in: A total of $1.5 million will fund efforts to explore three new passenger rail routes across Georgia and into neighboring states, according to U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff (D-GA)'s office.

The three $500,000 awards will support research into creating new commercial passenger rail corridors from Atlanta to Savannah; from Atlanta to Charlotte, NC; and from Atlanta to Chattanooga and other major cities in TN.

What we don't know: If this funding research will result in actual construction or the timeline for the project's start and completion.

NASA is edging closer to the conclusion of its ambitious seven-year mission, aiming to prevent a catastrophic collision of a massive asteroid named Bennu with Earth. Recent findings have indicated that there’s a 1 in 2700 chance of Bennu slamming into Earth on September 24, 2182.

The menace of asteroid Bennu
Roughly the size of the iconic Empire State Building, Bennu spans about a third of a mile wide. The potential aftermath of its predicted collision with Earth could equate to the explosive energy of 22 atomic bombs.

The asteroid makes its presence felt by passing Earth approximately every six years. However, scientists anticipate that its most perilous close encounter could be a mere 159 years away.

In a proactive move, NASA dispatched a spacecraft to Bennu in 2016. This mission was crucial for collecting samples and advancing the agency’s strategy to stave off a doomsday-like asteroid deflection scenario.
