We love to talk about concrete.

Earlier this week, our Upstate division had the pleasure of hosting the team from Ryan Homes at a Concrete 101 Lunch and Learn. Team members from Technical Services, Sales, and Customer Care were on hand to discuss concrete fundamentals, mix designs, quality control, and the factors that influence concrete performance.

A special thank-you to Eddie Deaver from Amrize for joining the discussion and sharing insights on the role cement plays in producing durable, high-quality concrete.

๐Ÿ’ก How do you rebuild a central mix concrete drum?

Earlier this year, our plant maintenance team took the Cowpens, SC plant offline for a weekend to complete a full drum relining project. The work included removing the worn liner, preparing the drum interior, installing new liners and mixing blades, and returning to the plant for production.

Most people never see what goes on inside a concrete plant, but projects like this are what keep operations running safely and efficiently - with minimal downtime to our customers. At Thomas Concrete, drums can typically be relined twice before replacement, extending the life of critical equipment and maximizing its value.

A big thank-you to our plant maintenance team for the planning, skill, and hard work that made it happen.

Our Chief Sustainability Officer, Karin Gรคbel, teamed up with Sustainability Manager, Joy Davidson, last week to meet with representatives from the City of Durham and talk about practical ways to reduce the carbon footprint of construction and how low-carbon concrete can help make a difference.

We're thankful for the chance to share ideas and learn from one another, all with the goal of moving the industry forward - together.

Last month, our Raleigh team in North Carolina had the pleasure of participating in a Touch-a-Truck event hosted by Junior League of Raleigh. CDP James Phillips and Sales Account Manager John Bowers were on hand to show off our mighty mixer.

๐Ÿ’ Even Stormy the Ice Hog stopped by to check out our truck and take a photo with James.

As much as we all love what we do, there's something special about sharing it with our community. Big thanks to James and Scott for representing .

Sustainability Week 2026: Evaluating impacts across an entire life cycle

By conducting a life cycle assessment (LCA), we can measure the impacts of the building across its life cycle, from construction to disposal. The assessment tracks all inputs and outputs of energy, natural resources, and waste within the defined scope of the LCA. The process exposes the drivers of the environmental impacts and the stages when they are most intense, which is essential information for developing reduction strategies and comparing one material over another.

From a sustainability and economic perspective, it is important that buildings are constructed with materials that optimize performance, require little maintenance, and provide a long service life.

We are excited to test a hybrid powered mixer truck at our Suwanee, Georgia plant, just outside of Atlanta.

Using stored battery energy over diesel, the drum turns efficiently and quietly while loading at the plant and unloading at the jobsite. This technology can also reduce fuel costs up to 30% while also showing significant reductions in carbon emissions. We see that as a winning combination!
