A historic multifamily building near downtown Pontiac that had sat vacant for years will soon welcome its first residents.
More than two years in the making by an emerging development firm headed by husband-and-wife team Gregory and Ronita Coleman, the 100-year-old Moorish-style Casa Del Rey apartments is expected to start seeing occupancy by next month. That comes after years of vacancy, bringing 54 “missing middle” housing units to a neighborhood just west of downtown Pontiac, itself going through a resurgence.
Designed by noted architect Robert O’Derrick, the Casa Del Rey building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.
With a formal ribbon cutting this week and a certificate of occupancy expected in the second week of October, the developers are already in the lease-up phase.
The building’s rents are aimed at middle-income renters, around $44,000-$88,000 annually for an individual in Oakland County. That aligns with what many housing experts say is greatly needed around the state.
