Tony Hallas caught this sublime shot of the Seagull Nebula (IC 2177) in Canis Major with his SVX90T. This emission nebula sits approximately 3,650 light-years away from Earth and spans roughly 240 light-years across. The cloud of gas at the top of this nebula fluoresces brightly from the energetic radiation given off by an extremely hot young star within (HD 53367). This type B star is twenty times the mass of our Sun, with prominent hydrogen emission lines in its spectrum. https://ow.ly/z2K550Z2t4H

Mark Cormier captured this brilliant shot of the Pacman Nebula (NGC 281) in Cassiopeia with his SVX152T. This bright emission nebula rests 9,500 light-years away from Earth and is part of the Milky Way’s Perseus Spiral Arm. It was discovered by Edward Emerson Barnard in August of 1883. The lane of dark dust to the right of this nebula, cuts into the glowing gas, giving this object its unique shape. https://ow.ly/9Op450YYkRV

Larry Ammann captured this striking shot of M80 (NGC 6093) with his SVX140T. According to Larry: “M80 is a globular cluster in Scorpius that has attracted the attention of professional astronomers due to its relatively large number of blue stragglers. These massive stars should be much younger than the cluster itself, and so they indicate the presence of interactions and collisions in M80's dense core. M80 appears small here but that is only because it lies on the opposite side of the Milky Way's center from us. As a result, its light passes by clouds of gas and dust around Rho Ophiuchi and IC 4603. These reflection and emission nebulae contain some of the closest star forming regions to Earth, with a distance around 450 light-years compared to M80's distance of 28,000 light-years.” https://ow.ly/K8Fg50YV8SK

This spectacular shot was taken by Mark Mruczec with his SVX102T-R. According to Mark:
"Deep in the constellation Cassiopeia lies a cosmic masterpiece called Melotte 15, right at the heart of the Heart Nebula. What you’re seeing are enormous clouds of gas and dust sculpted by powerful stellar winds from young, massive stars. These stars are basically cosmic “sculptors,” carving out intricate shapes while new stars are being born in the surrounding material. It’s like watching a galactic nursery in action, only on a scale so vast it makes our entire solar system look tiny." Visit Stellarvue for more on this image: https://ow.ly/Uwpt50YQRt4

Happy Earth Day! In 1970, twenty million people protested environmental degradation on the very first Earth Day. They had seen the Earthrise picture taken by Apollo 8 astronauts. Today, more than half a century later, we look at a very similar image taken by NASA Astronauts on Artemis II. Since the first Earth Day, we have lost forever 2/3 of the Earth's wildlife. Looking at this picture, is a reminder that we can do things to protect our fragile blue marble as it carries us, floating silently in the black vacuum of space.

For years I have been a fan of Pranvera Hyseni, a Kosovo-born astronomer and founder of Astronomy Outreach of Kosovo (AOK). Pran has a very strong and positive media presence; she is known for having built her country's first observatory. She is also a Ph.D. candidate at UC Santa Cruz. I have seen her at NEAF and AAS meetings for years, but we were always so busy we never had a chance to meet. This year Bob MacArthur introduced me to her and the three of us actually had a few moments to speak about and share our passion for astronomy and science education together.
