It's hard to believe these photos were taken more than 20 years ago.

At the time, C700 was just another job we were trying to get built safely, correctly, and on schedule.

Looking back now, it was so much more than that.

This was Seattle's first mile of light rail. Long before Link became part of everyday life for thousands of commuters, crews were out here building the guideway, installing post-tensioning, and laying the foundation for what the system would become.

I was 23 years old, learning the trade under great mentors like Don Zazinsky, working alongside the brothers and sisters of Ironworkers Local 86, Huitt-Zollars, Kiewit and seeing firsthand what good engineering and good leadership looked like.

Some projects stay with you.

Not because they're the biggest or most complicated, but because they shape who you become.

Twenty years later, I'm still grateful to have been a small part of a project that continues to serve the Seattle community every day.

Before Seattle's Link Light Rail connected communities across the region, there was C700.

As the first section of Sound Transit's Central Link project, C700 helped lay the foundation for the modern Seattle Light Rail system that thousands of riders depend on every day.

For Shaun, this project was more than post-tensioning and structural concrete—it was where he learned from industry veterans, worked alongside the brothers and sisters of Ironworkers Local 86, and witnessed firsthand how great engineering from Huitt-Zollars and exceptional ex*****on by Kiewit Pacific come together to build lasting infrastructure.

More than twenty years later, those lessons still influence the work we do today.
From post-tensioning systems and structural engineering to infrastructure repair and forensic investigations, every project teaches something worth carrying forward.

For most people, Seattle's Link Light Rail is just part of the daily commute. But for the crews, engineers, and ironworkers who built C700—the first mile of Seattle's light rail system—it was years of planning, precision, and long days that most riders will never see.

This project was about mentorship, craftsmanship, and learning from the people who came before us.

For Shaun, C700 was where he came up under foreman Don Zazinsky, learned what leadership looks like in the field, and worked alongside the brothers and sisters of Ironworkers Local 86 . It was also a front-row seat to the engineering excellence of Huitt-Zollars and the ex*****on of Kiewit Pacific as they delivered the foundation of what would become Seattle's modern light rail system.

More than twenty years later, those lessons still matter.

The structures we build today and the repairs we perform tomorrow are only possible because of the people who took pride in getting it right the first time.

When people hear the term "post-tension repair," it usually means something has already gone wrong.

A tendon was damaged. A slab was cut without proper investigation. A renovation uncovered a conflict with the existing post-tension system.

The focus quickly shifts to repairing the problem.

But in many cases, the repair could have been avoided altogether.

Post-tensioned concrete structures are designed to be strong, efficient, and durable. They are commonly used in parking garages, office buildings, high-rises, and industrial facilities because they allow for longer spans, fewer columns, and thinner slabs.

The challenge is that much of the system is hidden within the concrete.

Years after construction, contractors and building owners may need to perform renovations, install new equipment, create slab openings, or make structural modifications. Without understanding where tendons are located or how the system functions, even routine work can create unnecessary risks.

A damaged tendon can lead to project delays, additional engineering costs, and unexpected repairs.

That's why education and planning are so important.

Before cutting, coring, or modifying a post-tensioned concrete structure, project teams should understand the existing PT system and evaluate potential impacts. Taking the time to plan ahead can help reduce risk, avoid costly mistakes, and protect the long-term performance of the structure.
