Is your Maine well water hiding a "forever" secret?
In a state where nearly half of us rely on private wells, we take pride in our "homegrown" water. But while it might taste crisp and clean, many Mainers are discovering that PFAS (forever chemicals) are hitching a ride in our groundwater.
These man-made chemicals don't break down, and because Maine has a long history of paper milling, industrial manufacturing, and specialized agriculture, they’ve been found in wells from the County down to the Coast.
What you need to know:
The Invisible Guest: You can’t see, smell, or taste PFAS. The only way to know they are there is through specific lab testing.
Maine is Leading: Our state has some of the most proactive testing programs in the country. If you live near a "high-priority" site, the Maine DEP may even offer free testing or bottled water.
Solutions Exist: If your well tests high, don't panic. Certified Reverse Osmosis or Activated Carbon systems are highly effective at scrubbing these chemicals out of your drinking water.
Check Your Area
The Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) maintains an updated map of PFAS investigation areas. It’s a great first stop to see if your neighborhood is on the radar.
