Sharklet Technologies

Sharklet Technologies Sharklet offers the world's first technology designed to inhibit bacterial and viral growth through pattern alone; no chemicals required.

The biomimetic technology is inspired by sharkskin. More at www.sharklet.com and shop.sharklet.com.

While many people fear sharks, the terror of the seas may be prove to be instrumental in preventing/reducing infections, saving countless people from suffering and even death.

Here at Sharklet, we like to live every week like it’s shark week! 🦈

This year’s Shark Week is extra fun for us though - Sharklet makes an appearance on TOMORROW, Thursday night, 8/7c on .

Leave a shark in the comments below if you’ll be watching with us!

Sharklet was discovered when our founder asked why, unlike other slow moving marine animals such as whales, sharks don’t foul (i.e. get barnacles and algae on their skin). He took some impressions of shark skin, examined them under the microscope, and saw the unique, ordered structures. From there, the engineered microtopography that is Sharklet was born!

You can learn more about shark skin if you watch our appearance on ’s show on in just a week! Catch us on July 15.

Sharklet represents a departure from traditional antimicrobial technologies – our products are non-leaching, non-biocidal, and have no toxicity.

Instead, we use a physical surface modification inspired by the skin of sharks to inhibit microbial growth.

Be sure to catch us on ‘s show on on July 15, where we will researching shark skin with Dr. Lee and the team at !

Sharklet has a few competitors in the germ-control space, but this picture speaks for itself: not only is Sharklet easier on your wallet, but our germ control technology is more effective than the competitors’, and all without using heavy metals or chemicals like they do!

(Plus, our technology is inspired by Sharks. What’s not to love?)

Sharklet micropattern looking good today on our Olympus laser microscope! See how it lights up both layers of the surface (first the base layer between the features, and then the top of the features) as it scans?

The Sharklet micropattern (right) was inspired by Shark skin (left). Some sea creatures, like whales, experience fouling on their skin by algae and barnacles, but sharks don’t! The unique pattern of their denticles helps keep them clean.

Sharklet took that concept and engineered a tiny version of the pattern which keeps everyday surfaces clean of something much smaller than barnacles: bacteria & viruses.

What similarities and differences do you see between the two textures?

How does Sharklet compare to other germ control solutions?

The biggest advantages to the Sharklet solution for germ control are that our surfaces will work even in between cleanings, don’t use chemicals or leach toxins into the environment, don’t use heavy metals (and we’re cheaper than those options anyway), and don’t contribute to creating resistant strains of bacteria.

Bonus: Sharklet is a biomimetic technology based on the texture of shark skin, so we have that “cool factor” too!

Sharklet can also be manufactured into non-flat things, like 3D objects and things with macro textures (i.e. textures you can see / feel).

Isn’t this microscope image of Sharklet on a macro texture pretty cool!?

Our SharkletShield film rolls have a sticky side so that the germ control technology can be applied anywhere you can imagine.

Door push bars, elevator buttons, point of sale counters… the sky’s the limit! (Speaking of the sky - how about on airplane tray tables? We know those are germy! 🤢)

The adhesive is low adhesion, which means that once you’re ready to replace the film, it can be easily removed and won’t leave behind any sticky residue.

26” x 150’ rolls of SharkletShield are available now on our website (https://shop.sharklet.com/) and on Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08VZR6WKY?ref=myi_title_dp). Where will you stick it?

Not only is Sharklet effective at reducing bacterial colonization of a surface; it also reduces bacterial migration.

One area in which this is an issue is in catheter associated UTI (CAUTI) infections, where bacteria migrate from outside the body, up the catheter, and into the bladder, causing an infection.

In this image, you can see how smooth and Sharklet patterned rods were used to connect two separated areas of agar. Bacteria was inoculated on the left side. The bacteria used that un-patterned rod to migrate across the gap and start colonizing on the right side!

The Sharklet patterned rod, however, showed migration reductions of 81% (p=0.03) for Escherichia coli and 92% (p=0.003) for Serratia marcescens compared to the smooth. See the poster for this research here:http://www.sharklet.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/POSTER44_191.pdf

When a laser is shone through the Sharklet film, the light diffracts through the microscopic features of the Sharklet micropattern and creates this fun macroscopic diamond pattern that you can see. It’s a quick and easy way to check if a film is Sharklet patterned or smooth.
