Great projects are the result of teams bringing specialized expertise together to solve complex challenges.

The Seattle Aquarium Ocean Pavilion has been named the 2026 Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement Award winner by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

Designed to withstand a magnitude-9.0 earthquake, the project includes a remarkable 30-foot-wide viewing window and creates an immersive experience connecting visitors with marine life. It's an impressive example of engineering and construction working together to bring an ambitious project to life.

We're proud to have supported Herzog Glass on this project as the delegated engineer and 3D/BIM provider for the exterior curtain wall and interior storefront.

That translation is where coordination becomes critical.

Can the installer reach the connection?
Can components be positioned as shown?
Is there enough tolerance for the actual installation?
Does the sequence make sense?

When reviewing a façade condition, look beyond the immediate component and consider what surrounds it.

Ask:

• What is supporting this system?
• How is it connected?
• What happens where materials meet?
• Does movement affect the connection?
• Can the installer actually access the area?

Looking at the surrounding conditions can reveal issues that aren't obvious when reviewing a single detail.

Before construction begins, teams need to understand how the different components interact—not just whether each individual detail has been drawn.

A coordinated façade design considers the relationship between structure, anchorage, cladding, movement, tolerances, and installation.
