Today, we're celebrating Brent's 30-year anniversary with PSI Urethanes.

Brent is a critical part of the PSI team and has been our Production Supervisor for many years. He is responsible for training, scheduling, production runs both large and small, and much more within our production department.

In the 30 years Brent has been with PSI, he has helped put the "Custom" in "Custom Cast Urethanes." He has been a part of many difficult and challenging projects that have contributed to PSI's growth and helped shape who we are as a company today.

Shock absorbing materials are designed to reduce impact, vibration, and wear by absorbing energy instead of returning it.

One of the most common applications is in industrial bumpers and production lines, where moving equipment needs to stop at a precise point. Instead of allowing the impact to transfer through the machine, the material absorbs much of the force, helping protect equipment from damage.

These materials are also widely used for vibration dampening. Think of a washing machine with an uneven load. Without vibration control, the machine can shake, create excessive noise, and experience additional wear over time. Adding a vibration dampening material helps minimize movement, reduce noise, and extend the life of the equipment.

Rebound is the amount of energy a material returns after an impact. The more energy it gives back, the higher the rebound.

To measure rebound, a steel ball with a specific weight and size is dropped from a set height onto a standardized piece of urethane. After impact, the ball bounces back, and the height of that bounce tells us how much energy the urethane returned.

When the ball strikes the urethane, the material compresses, stores energy, then releases it as it returns to its original shape. That released energy pushes the ball upward. The higher the bounce, the greater the rebound.

This simple test provides valuable insight into how a material will perform in real-world applications where impact, responsiveness, and energy transfer matter.

Not all rubber materials behave the same. Some are designed to return energy, while others are made to absorb it.

Think of a high rebound material like a super ball. When it hits the ground, it quickly returns most of its energy, creating a high bounce. This type of formulation is ideal for applications where responsiveness and energy return are important.

A shock absorbing formulation works differently. Imagine a softer ball that barely bounces after hitting the ground. Instead of returning the energy, it absorbs much of the impact, reducing vibration and protecting surrounding components.
