Rivian owners, is your home charging dropping to 7.1 kW? You're not crazy and you're definitely not alone!
We've been listening to the community, and this is one of the most frustrating and common issues we're seeing. Instead of the full 11 kW, many of you are getting a puzzling slowdown.
Here's a quick look at why this might be happening, pulled straight from owner discussions:
1. It's Getting Hot in Here: Charging in a hot garage or direct sunlight can cause your Rivian or charger to "thermally throttle," slowing down to protect the components.
2. Circuit Breaker Mismatch: Your charger needs a hardwired 60A breaker with a 48A EVSE to get the maximum 11.5 kW speed. Anything less, and you're leaving power on the table.
3. Adapter Overheating: We've seen lots of reports that some third-party NACS-to-J1772 adapters (like those from Lectron) are getting hot and causing a charge speed reduction.
Our quick fixes, inspired by fellow owners:
✅ Keep your charging spot cool.
✅ Upgrade to a 60A/48A hardwired setup for max speed.
✅ Swap out overheating adapters for a more reliable brand.
✅ Reach out to Rivian Support. Some owners have received a software fix or a charger replacement!
