My name is Bianca Entenmann, and I founded Equine Harmony Rescue & Rehab in Watsonville, California, in 2018. My mission has always been to provide horses with the best care possible and to keep an open mind about therapies that can improve their comfort and quality of life.
Recently, one of my horses, Thunder, was diagnosed with right front lameness, possibly related to distal enthesopathy of the lateral collateral ligament of the coffin joint, along with left front lameness caused by moderate osteoarthritis of the fetlock joint. After discussing my options, I chose not to pursue traditional therapies because I remembered the success I had with gallium nitrate (GN) about 15 years ago. At that time, I used GN with a couple of horses suffering from navicular disease and saw remarkable improvements.
I started Thunder on GN on May 25. Since then, I’ve noticed he’s moving much more freely, and the slight hitch in his stride that had been there appears to be gone. While I know every horse responds differently, I’m very encouraged by what I’ve seen so far. My plan is to keep him on GN for six months before cycling him off to evaluate how well he maintains his progress.
Next week I’ll also be starting another horse, Dansey, an 18-hand Thoroughbred/Percheron cross. She has stiffness through her hips and is sometimes short-strided behind at the trot. I’m excited to see whether GN can help improve her movement and comfort as well.
As someone who has dedicated her life to horse rescue and rehabilitation, I appreciate having another option to consider for horses with mobility challenges. Whenever I believe GN may be appropriate, I’m happy to share my personal experiences with other horse owners. While every horse is unique and treatment decisions should be made with a veterinarian, my experiences with Thunder—and years ago with my navicular horses—have given me reason to be optimistic.
*** Thank you Bianca for your love of horses and we are glad Thunder is feeling better on Gallium Nitrate. For those followers that live near Watsonville, California, Equine Harmony Rescue and Rehab is an amazing resource.
Sincerely,
