NASA is seeking an extra $3.7B in funding from Congress (over next 10 years) to design, build and test 'manned' X-planes for aviation. This includes all-electric and hybrid-electric aircraft, and will leverage research done over past five years in the Environmentally Responsible Aviation (ERA) project. To put the $3.7B in perspective, Aeronautics helps generate a trade surplus of $75B per year for the US economy through export of aircraft and engines.
- Dr Jaiwon Shin of ARMD (speaking in a Town Hall meeting at Glenn Research Center today)
CFD Nexus was part of the ERA project's combustion modeling and engine re-design work, to help develop technologies to reduce fuel-burn and emissions of aircraft engines.
The combustion modeling and testing team (of which CFD Nexus was a member) received a NASA achievement award today, for meeting 50% fuel-burn and 75% NOx emissions reductions goals.
Bring on the X-planes!
