Last week, our plastic extrusion company in Saltillo, Mexico had the privilege of hosting students from Centro de Atención Múltiple No. 4, a local school for young adults with Down syndrome.

We walked them through the plant and showed them how we make the products you see in cars and homes. The smiles in these photos say more than we can.

May was a good month for gratitude.

Family. Fishing. God & Country.

One person is very grateful for beer...fair, but our favorite: "I am thankful for you all."

Enough said.

This month, our aluminum extrusion tooling company in Bad Axe, MI is saying goodbye to two people who, between them, gave this team 77 years.

---

Jerry Lackowski - 43 years

Jerry came on as the first non-family CNC lathe operator, a small detail that says a lot about how far back he goes. Over the years he became one of the first in the die design department, started running pickups to Canada, and eventually earned his Class A license to drive semi. He did a lot of different things, and he did them well.

Around the plant, he's known as Moose.

Jerry's going to miss the steady work and a place he trusted, but most of all, the people.

His advice to anyone starting out in manufacturing: "Patience is key. Pay attention and listen to the advice that is given to you. Everyone you work with is always willing to help."

In retirement, Jerry's looking forward to golf, working through his honey-do list, and subbing in on driving if we need him.

---

Ray Krug - 34 years

Ray has done just about everything on the plant floor. He spent years on nights before moving to day shift supervisor, which he counts as one of his proudest milestones.

What kept him coming back all these years? The people. The friendships that built up over nearly 34 years.

His advice: "Always stay focused on the end game."

In retirement, Ray is looking forward to traveling and camping.

---

Jerry and Ray - thank you.

You've given this team 77 years of hard work. You've built a legacy, and you will be missed. Congratulations to you both.

Our forge tooling company in Bad Axe, MI marked National Pizza Party Day last Friday with pizza and breadsticks from Hungry Howie's for the whole shop. Not a bad way to head into the weekend.

Thanks to everyone who pulled it together.

Gratitude boards went up at our plants this month. Here are some of the first entries.

Family. Being alive. Our job. A short list of names from someone who clearly didn't want to leave anyone out.

We'll be back at the end of May to see how full these get.

After 20 years on the floor at our blow molding company in Ubly, MI, Kevin Osentoski is officially retiring.

Kevin came to us after 28 years as a carpenter, when the trade work slowed down. What kept him here for two decades? In his own words: "I like working here." We tried to get more out of him, but that's about as sentimental as he gets!

Last week, the team sent him off with a potluck lunch and cake, straight to the face.

In retirement, Kevin's headed back to his woodworking roots, building all kinds live-edge stands, tables, and whatever else he decides to make next.

His advice to the next generation: "Just keep working hard." We'll take it.

Congratulations, Kevin, and thank you for 20 years. You've more than earned all that comes next.

Five years ago, we did a spotlight on Jeramy Deming, a guy who started on the production floor at 18 and worked his way up to Toolroom & Maintenance Manager. Today, he's running the whole plant.

Interestingly enough, the moment Jeramy decided to build a career here happened in the toolroom where we left off. He was just two years in when he was interviewing to join the tooling team. He pointed to the plant manager across from him and said, "I want that chair someday.” It took half a dozen career moves and more than a few hard lessons, but here he is.

His title may remain the same for years to come, but Jeramy’s journey is far from over. "No matter how good you are, how far you’ve come, you can always improve.” He learned the basics of leadership managing a toolroom team of 3. Managing a plant of 93, he’s learning something much harder - how to take a step back, look at the bigger picture, and lead with a shared vision and trust in others.

Congratulations, Jeramy. The chair looks good on you.

Student tours have been in full swing across our plants this year. Last month, we welcomed Ascent and North Huron students at our three companies in Bad Axe, MI.

Perhaps the highlight of them all was at our aluminum extrusion tooling company. Team members shared stories of their non-traditional career paths, several of them starting as interns or straight out of high school and working their way up to leadership roles. The students were totally locked. One even went directly to the Plant Manager afterwards to ask about an internship. This is why we open our doors.

It was the same energy at our forge tooling and two-shot injection molding companies. Students walked the floors and got to see the kind of work that's happening right here in their backyard. It sparked some really thoughtful questions. We hope a few of them remember it when they're thinking about what comes next.

A huge thank you to everyone who took time out of their day to make these tours happen:

Thumb Tool & Engineering (Aluminum Extrusion Tooling):
Tracy Kuntze (Plant Manager), Michaela LeJeune (Automation & Integration Manager), Jason Sobczak (Wire EDM Dept. Supervisor), Jeremy Wolshleger (CNC Mill Dept. Supervisor), John Jimkoski (CAD Designer), Matt Jurgess (Inside Sales)
