Holloway, Inc., the world’s largest supplier of agricultural gypsum, today distributes nearly one-half million tons of premium-quality gypsum each year for use in Central California. We combine complete mining, milling, monitoring, spreading and radio-dispatched delivery capabilities. History of H.M. Holloway, Inc. It was during the Depression of the early 1930’s that Harvey “Dad” Holloway discove

red the mineral that was to change his destiny and the destiny of the Valley’s agricultural lands. He was working as an oil field caretaker in the Lost Hills area when he first noticed outcroppings of a strange white mineral. He would watch a few local farmers carry off wagon loads of the mineral to put on their crops. Holloway’s curiosity prompted him to take samples into Bakersfield for analysis. The lab informed him that the substance was calcium sulfate, or gypsum, a mineral known to neutralize alkali in soil and improve water penetration. Holloway concluded that the substance might have a commercial value. With the assistance of his son, Albert, he acquired a lease for a 40-acre parcel of land, and, in 1932, launched his gypsum mining operation with not much more than a pick and shovel. Holloway was creative when it came to marketing his gypsum. He knew a farmer who had a 40-acre alfalfa field on Highway 46, the main thoroughfare in the area. The farmer agreed to let him put gypsum on one half of the field. Soon, Holloway’s marketing intuition paid off. The farmer’s yield doubled on the half with gypsum, and the lush growth in a side-by-side comparison was evident to everyone traveling on 46. News of this valuable soil amendment traveled quickly, and Holloway was in business. Today, the company that started with a pick and shovel is a thriving business. Holloway gypsum has been used throughout the San Joaquin Valley to reclaim alkaline soils, improve water penetration, and in the final analysis — increase crop yields, the goal of every farmer. The Holloway Group and Senior Vice President of Products and Sales Daniel Terry were proud to participate in this year's Kern County Economic Summit and stand alongside the hardworking people helping shape the future of agriculture and our region.

Events like this remind us that even through challenges, the future remains bright because of the resilience, innovation and determination of our farmers and local partners in all of the regions we serve (environmental, logistics, minining ...). We're excited for what's ahead!

After 94 years, we’re still a small, family-oriented company.

And while we’re not doing things at a global scale just yet, we’re proud to be doing our part here in California.

Founded in 1932, Holloway was built on soil health, in the agriculture industry where every day is for us. When we build better soil, we’re not just growing stronger crops, we’re improving water retention, reducing runoff and creating systems that last for generations.

Today, that same mindset also drives the Environmental and Materials Recovery side of our business. Materials that were once considered “waste” are being brought in to expired pits and repurposed into valuable inputs and materials that can restore balance and give new life back to the land. Our state-of-the-art Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) will recover recycled plastics, metals and other materials that will be reused to produce consumer products and significantly advance California’s sustainability goals.

It’s a full-circle approach: take what would be discarded, apply science and stewardship and turn it into something productive again.

That’s not just sustainability, it’s our responsibility.

As imported fertilizer costs soar, "more local growers are using compost this year, as well as locally sourced gypsum..."

But following up on The Bakersfield Californian's frontpage article today on the increasing use of local , Holloway Sr. VP of Products Daniel Terry underscores a critical point: in a volatile market, knowing exactly what's in your inputs (and where they come from) is no longer optional. It’s essential... https://hollowayag.com/replacing-fertilizer-with-gypsum-compost/

Locally produced gypsum and compost offer a level of consistency, transparency and supply reliability that imported inputs can’t match.

That said, Terry and Holloway Senior Agronomist Allie Cushnyr noted it is critical that growers test their soils, tissues and water sources (analyses Holloway’s agronomy team can provide) to ensure they are applying what their soil and crop need.

“When considering soil amendments, you have to test all parts of your operation (soil, tissue, water) throughout the season,” Cushnyr said Thursday. “That’s the best way to ensure you are providing your crops with the right nutrition.

"Compost, for example, is a great source of nutrients and organic matter, but it also depends on the type of compost and if it’s high quality.”

Read Holloway's take on this week’s news around soil amendment use and the American Farm Bureau Federation's survey on soaring input costs in agriculture:

And thank you to both organizations for shedding a light on this topic of soaring input costs for our growers, who continue to overcome challenge after challenge to put food on our tables and clothes on our backs.

Thanks to The Bakersfield Californian for highlighting Holloway's soil amendments, agronomy and spreading services in today's lead story:

"Senior Vice President Daniel Terry at local soil amendment company Holloway said he definitely is seeing more local growers use compost this year, as well as locally sourced gypsum, than in years past.

“I think with what’s going on with the war, people are looking for alternatives,” Terry said.

He emphasized that growers need to assess exactly which amendments their soil needs (analyses Holloway provides) and make sure they know the full ingredients of any product they apply.

Rain or shine, ag never stops.

On this rainy , we’re at a coastal vineyard helping a partner and grower with their spreading and soil amendment needs.

This particular vineyard is being removed and redeveloped as we write this, with the grower bringing in compost during the process to help revitalize the soil for the next set of vines.

Redevelopments are an ideal time to bring in soil amendments, to get nutrients down beneath the roots prior to planting permanent crops such as vines or trees.

“You only have one shot to get it right!” our partner reiterated today between raindrops.

We look forward to sharing more about this project in coming weeks and seeing the next generation of this vineyard — and its award-winning Chardonnay — come into production.

On , we’d like to tip our cap to our farmers, ranchers and producers here in California, where we produce nearly half the country’s vegetables and over three-quarters of its fruits and nuts.

Thank you to all of our farmers, farm workers, corporate partners, associations, universities, logistics partners and, of course, our own employees, for helping make agriculture such a resilient industry to work in.

In our latest grower testimonial, Wasco rose farmer Corbitt Smith discusses the importance of taking a scientific approach to your soil and making it the foundation for everything you do. hollowayag.com/reina-rosa-farming

“Taking a scientific approach is key,” Smith said. “Having the soil and preparation ready, that’s absolutely the most important thing you can do before starting any crop –getting that foundation prepared ... and once you have that foundation started you can pretty much do anything.”

Summer … errr… spring is officially here in Central California on this , but with temperatures pushing the mid-90s today from Paso Robles to the Valley, it feels more like summer.

Here, early budbreak is underway in the vines just down the road from our Paso Robles office.

With the season underway, vineyard crews are focused on pruning, mowing and getting the vines, soil and irrigation lines ready for the spring push.

Thank you to all of our farm workers battling the heat this week to get our vineyards, orchards and fields ready for spring.

One last glimpse of almond bloom … It’s hard to believe bloom is winding down in California’s Central Valley, with daytime temperatures this week pushing into the 80s and even the 90s in some regions next week.

As we move the bees out of our orchards, and get back into the field to mow and start applying post-bloom treatments – don’t forget to spread soil amendments ( , , etc.) during this critical time.

Quality is everything in tree crops, and soil amendments are critical to improving crop health and production, ensuring our soils are optimized for water and nutrient uptake. As we begin to have nutrient and pest management discussions this spring, let’s not forget our most important asset of all – a healthy soil.

Contact Holloway today to speak with a local agronomist and get your soils tested and in tiptop shape for the spring push!
