Hurricane Isaias has become the first Atlantic hurricane of the 2026 season. The National Hurricane Center confirmed the upgrade Wednesday night.
This is a historically significant development in an exceptionally late-starting hurricane season. But the immediate story is the growing threat to the northern Gulf Coast.
What matters tonight
- Track: Isaias is moving toward the northeastern Gulf Coast, with landfall possible late Friday or early Saturday.
- Wind: Additional strengthening is possible before landfall.
- Storm surge: Dangerous coastal flooding is a major concern from Mississippi through the Florida Panhandle.
- Rainfall: Widespread 3–7 inches, with localized totals approaching 10 inches, could produce significant flooding.
- South Texas: The current forecast does not indicate a direct threat to San Antonio or the Texas coast.
