Very interesting article published by Industry Week. Manufacturers are seeing 2024 as a challenge on several levels. Labor costs are rising while skill and quality decline. The work ethic among unskilled and semi-skilled workers continues to erode. Credit is not readily available and what is available comes at high interest. Manufacturers are protecting the resources they have and preparing to weather the storm. Many are investing heavily in technology. The plastics industry is very similar in many ways, to those featured in the article. 2024 will be a struggle, especially for companies that are heavily leveraged.

At Mercury Plastics, 2024 is a year where we are furthering our investments in sustainability and operational efficiency. Investments in Industry 4.0, Lean, Solar Energy, High Density Storage, Landfill Reduction, and additional optimization of our Closed Loop Recycling are yielding strong returns. Among the many things we have learned through Lean, one of the best lessons is to focus on what we do well and do more of it. Mercury Plastics continues to take a lead role in sustainability, recycling and reducing our carbon footprint. We are also working with PCR (post-consumer-recycled) material staying ahead of the requirement. Our superior team of manufacturing “First Responders” at all three locations make it possible for Mercury Plastics to be a leader in recycling, sustainability and operational efficiency. Thanks to our team, we are well prepared to face the challenges of 2024.

A great article written by our General Manager, Carl Livesay.
"As businesses transition to the next phase of maturity, their talent requirements change direction. To paraphrase Helen Keller, a bend in the road is only the end if you fail to make the turn."

Too often, the answer to early success is having everyone work harder and longer.

"Don’t underestimate the value returning citizens place being on a team where they can be trusted. "

Often overlooked, formerly incarcerated citizens, can make an excellent addition to your team when given the chance to thrive and succeed1

What are your thoughts on adding return citizens to the workforce?

When given structure and treated with understanding, returning citizens are more often worth the investment of your time than doing an open call of the general population.

Mercury Plastics MD is very proud of our Fabrication team for a recent project!

Senior Engineer Scotty Kneebone was asked to design something clever for our conference room and to maybe show off a little. I admit we had high expectations, but we did not expect the WOW.

Fabrication expert Alex Alcala took Scotty’s design and working with his team members Juan Lozano and Anna Molina they manufactured a beautiful pair of matching display tables for our conference room. Note there is no hardware. Everything you see if interlocked and manufactured to reveal a soft glow through the tabletop with no lighting. It is almost a shame to place anything on these tables.

Excellent work team, we can’t wait to see what you come up with next! 😊
