Harris Rubin Studio

Harris Rubin Studio Harris Rubin, Inc. is a custom furniture design and manufacturing studio based in Baltimore, Marylan Each piece is handmade and hand finished in our studio.

Our goal is to create elegant, classic, timeless pieces in metal, wood, mosaic, stone and glass. The work is inspired by 18th and 19th Century antiques, early European Modernism (Czech, Dutch, and French), the spare clarity of Japanese design, and late modern minimalism. These aesthetic tributaries may intersect within the same piece. Our dining tables are comfortable while being beautiful. They t

end to be configured with steel bases and wood tops. We prefer to use local hardwoods; walnut, ash, oak, maple, cherry. We use environmentally compliant finishes that are both beautiful and durable. All of our finishes are hand-rubbed. Leg room, space for chairs and stability, are important factors in design of our dining tables. Our consoles present an opportunity for us to be sculptural. We like to take advantage of the console to compose, to draw lines and shapes. A great cocktail table has to be an inviting place to sit, to read, to have a drink. You may want the cocktail table to "disappear" if you have a beautiful rug. Or you may want the table to stand out. Our minimal designs are seen most often in this category. It is a great challenge in craftsmanship to make a clean minimal piece. Corners and joints must be crisp. All of our joinery is hand-cut and hand-finished. Our end/occasional tables are stylish and versatile. We take advantage of the size of these pieces to make our "jewelry". These pieces may be finished in gold or silver leaf, or made in bronze, nickel, chrome or copper. The Bookshelf is one of our signature pieces. It is derived from the Dutch modernism of Mondrian and Rietveld. The slightly larger steel base adds an Asian element to the design. As with all of our pieces it can be done in any combination of colors, wood finishes and steel finishes.

Short Eared Owls, one of my favorite owls to see and to photograph. These were on the hunt at dusk, flying low over grassy fields looking for voles. They hunt the same terrain as harriers, in the last photo, both a harrier and short eared owl are competing for the same prey.

The Conowingo Dam spans the Susquehanna River in north east Maryland. This is prime time to see the bald eagles that gather there to fish at its base. These are some of the eagles that I saw Monday. It takes up to five years for a juvenile eagle to develop its distinct white head and tail feathers. Pictured here are both adult and juvenile eagles. In the 1700’s Eagle populations were estimated to be between 300,000 and 500,000. At the lowest point, during the early 1960’s (due to habitat loss and DDT) there were as few as 450 nesting pairs. Now, thanks to conservation efforts, and the important work of Rachel Carson, and others, there are estimated to be approximately 70,000 eagles and 5,000 nesting pairs. On this Thanksgiving, that’s something to be thankful for.

Suddenly Gingko. Gingko trees are almost living fossils. The species goes back about 290 million years. Gingko trees that are over 600 years old (currently living in China) show no signs of aging. They reproduce and grow just as they did as young trees. They are able to resist pests. Gingko trees tend to drop their leaves all at once, so in one day, you can have a carpet of Gingko leaves covering the ground. Fascinating and beautiful.

This juvenile Red Tailed Hawk was perched on a branch, scanning an empty corn field, yesterday in Baltimore County. It does not yet have its deep orange/red tail feathers. Quite a beautiful face.

Often difficult to photograph, Kingfishers tend to fly away when they perceive your presence. This female was on the other side of the Gunpowder River, and I was tucked behind some bushes. She was pretty far away, and this image is cropped. I consider myself fortunate when I can watch a Kingfisher without scaring it away.

I photographed this Red Headed Woodpecker at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. I think they are among the most beautiful woodpeckers, with their ruby red head, and the black and white patterns on their chest and wings.

What better time to post spider web pictures than Halloween. I am fascinated by spiderwebs, their complexity, the beauty of the spider’s labor, the notion of them as hunting tools. Most of these photos were taken in the morning, when the newly woven spiderwebs were dripping with dew.
